June 15-19: Designing Superheroes

Superheroes are a big part of American pop culture with characters as diverse as Batman, Wonder Woman, Mr. Incredible and Diaperman. Students will learn to draw these and their own brightly colored lads and ladies who fight crime. The class will teach the students how to draw humanoid heroes in pose, physique, personality, costume and presentation.

June 22-26: From Storyboard to Animatic

In this class students learn to draw storyboards just like the ones used in movies and television shows. Once the storyboards are created students will develop them into an animated piece. The class will explore drawing, camera moves and lighting, timing and communication, and applying simple animation and camera moves to give a simulation of what a final film would look like.

July 6-11: Rendering Techniques for Comics

(taught by the awsome Daniel Salcido ) This class will focus on illustration techniques including the use of pencil, charcoal, and inking along with cross hatching and other rendering approaches to create shade and shadow and other dramatic effects in cartoon drawings.

July 13-17: Storytelling for Comics

Students will explore the process of creating a story including writing an outline, developing the structure of the story, creating characters, and making rough layouts.

Beginner level ages 7-14:

August 3-7: Cartoon Craft

Young students will participate in a fun week of cartoon and crafts combined, including the creation of projects that explore collage, flipbooks, zoetrope, paper dolls, puppets, and robots.

I got to see a sneak peek of the Coraline exhibit at the Cartoon Art Museum

OK folks, I had a sneak peek at the “art of Coraline” exhibit at the Cartoon Art Museum and it’s……fantastic. Most of the main characters are represented in full size puppets and Maquettes. There are prints of digital concept art. There is a case of Coraline’s inner workings and and tiny hands spelling out a message in sign language. All so cool, all so amazing.

The show opens Saturday and runs for 3 weeks. Spread the word. These are tough times for non-profits and by supporting the museum it will make sure we get to see more work of the medium I know we all love.

“The Cartoon Art Museum proudly presents original works of art from the feature film CORALINE, produced by LAIKA, the Portland-based animation studio owned by Nike co-founder and Chairman Philip H. Knight, and released by Focus Features on February 6, 2009. The exhibition features drawings, storyboards, puppets, sets, costumes and more from this groundbreaking movie, the first ever stop-motion animated film to be shot in 3D. In stop-motion animation, everything seen on screen actually exists in the real world, as opposed to computer-generated animation. This exhibit includes almost 80 pieces from the extraordinary world of Coraline, created by a team of over 300 artists bringing to life the vision of the world’s foremost stop-motion animation director, Henry Selick.”

APE 2008 sketches

mermaidandsharkman

Well, APE was a week ago and it was a blast. I did do some sketches for myself as well as for the Cartoon Art Museum. I sold one of them as well.

Aging glam rocker.

Fantasy gal.

Dragon.

A sexy retro girl. (This one sold! Yay!)

A strange meeting.

This picture I did at one of my teaching gigs. I thought it was a fun sketch.

24 Hour Comic Book Day Oct 18, 2008 …11am to 11am

24hourcomics_final3

It’s almost that time of year, time for the official 24 Hour Comic Book Day.

The folks from the Cartoonist Conspiracy in San Francisco have joined forces with Comics Outpost to take on this unique challenge where artist work to complete a 24 page comic in 24 hours.

Crazy…..yes, of course. But an excellent challenge none the less. I will be participating, will you?

24 Hour Comics Day is an event where cartoonists all over the world attempt to create their own 24 page comics in 24 consecutive hours.

The San Francisco event is being hosted by the S.F. Cartoonist Conspiracy and Comics Outpost (thanks guys). This is the first official 24 Hour event in SF since the one at Comics Relief in 2005 and we are really excited to have a good venue once again.

If you are interested in taking part in this years event, please email Doctor Popular at at yoyogenius at gmail dot com with your name and phone number. Space is limited to 20 seats, so serious inquiries only, please. Additionally, we are asking for a $5 fee to reserve a space, this money goes to Gary and crew and is the least we could do to cover his expenses.

Artists should bring their supplies, but leave your ideas and storyboards at home. The goal of creating a 24 hour comic is to push your boundaries, and learn just how much you can create in just one day.

We are also looking for any sponsors (pizza, art supplies, etc) and press. If you can help us out, or would like to take part in the event, please let us know.

Time/Date: 11am Sat Oct 18th, 2008 to 11am Sunday Oct 19th

Location: Comics Outpost – 2381 OCEAN AVE. SAN FRANCISCO, CA. 94127 (415) 239-COMX (2669) – http://www.comicoutpost.net/

Still not sure, check out these samples by: Mike Hale and Brian Kolm
