the Road to 24 Hour Comic Book Day – part 6 – Using black paper.

blackpaper1

The one thing you don’t want to do with your 24 Hour Comic Book Day comic is color the entire space page of space with a Sharpie pen. Besides the horrible smell it will take a lot of your time away from reaching the goal of 24 pages in 24 hours. So I decided to try something diffrent….use black paper and add in the white areas.

The tests below use a white colored pencil from Blick, FW Ink, some pink gouache, as well as the white gel pen. The white gel pen was fantastic and the FW acrylic ink worked well too. The pencil took some enhancing with PhotoShop as did the pink gouache.

What do you think guys?

the Road to 24 Hour Comic Book Day – part 4 – less then a week away

swamy_mcfur-001

Well, the 24 Hour Comic Book Day event is this coming weekend (October 18th at 11am to October 19th to 11am) and I am ready to go. I really have enjoyed preparing for the challenge and have high hope that this will get me revved up for some new projects. I might even make a mini comic for APE from the final art if it comes out all right.

NOTE: There are still a few spaces left of this writing, so email Doc Pop if you are interested.

For tonight’s practice I did an 8 page comic with ranges of 20 to 45 min for each page. The pages are created with a template I created in Adobe Illustrator and allows me to create standard comic art pretty quickly. The art was created actual size for a standard comic book so it’s faster and easier to do with the challenge’s deadline. The art is drawn in blue pencil and inked with FW Acrylic Ink. The first page still has the pencils and template included. The rest of the pages have been cleaned up.

The story was created as I went along adding the first and 7th pages last. It’s not perfect, but there is lots of stuff I like about it.

the Road to 24 Hour Comic Book Day – part 2

treasure-test-002

So 24 Hour Comic Book Day is on October 18th and I will be perticipating at San Francisco’s Comic Outpost.

In my preperation for the challenge I drew a short 4 page comic last night. Each page took about 20 minuets and there was little to no planning. The pages were drawn with blue pencil then with FW ink and brush. I know it is far from perfect, but it does give me some ideas of what I want to do in (aprox.) two weeks.

For the final 24HCBD comic I will spend more time per page, but I deifinitly agree with Zach Cannon that working actual size is the best route. I also found that I did the pannel boarders after I did the art and that might save some time durring the challenge as well. I am also planning on semi-planning my Genré before hand which is another of Mr. Cannon’s suggestions.

24 Hour Comic Book Day Oct 18, 2008 …11am to 11am

24hourcomics_final3

It’s almost that time of year, time for the official 24 Hour Comic Book Day.

The folks from the Cartoonist Conspiracy in San Francisco have joined forces with Comics Outpost to take on this unique challenge where artist work to complete a 24 page comic in 24 hours.

Crazy…..yes, of course. But an excellent challenge none the less. I will be participating, will you?

24 Hour Comics Day is an event where cartoonists all over the world attempt to create their own 24 page comics in 24 consecutive hours.

The San Francisco event is being hosted by the S.F. Cartoonist Conspiracy and Comics Outpost (thanks guys). This is the first official 24 Hour event in SF since the one at Comics Relief in 2005 and we are really excited to have a good venue once again.

If you are interested in taking part in this years event, please email Doctor Popular at at yoyogenius at gmail dot com with your name and phone number. Space is limited to 20 seats, so serious inquiries only, please. Additionally, we are asking for a $5 fee to reserve a space, this money goes to Gary and crew and is the least we could do to cover his expenses.

Artists should bring their supplies, but leave your ideas and storyboards at home. The goal of creating a 24 hour comic is to push your boundaries, and learn just how much you can create in just one day.

We are also looking for any sponsors (pizza, art supplies, etc) and press. If you can help us out, or would like to take part in the event, please let us know.

Time/Date: 11am Sat Oct 18th, 2008 to 11am Sunday Oct 19th

Location: Comics Outpost – 2381 OCEAN AVE. SAN FRANCISCO, CA. 94127 (415) 239-COMX (2669) – http://www.comicoutpost.net/

I found that the official blog for 24 Hour Comic Book day has posted a fun video for 24-Hour Drawpocalypse in Portland, OR (which will be on April 5). Now as someone who has attempted the 24 Hour Comic Book challenge, I can relate to the video.
