CAM Sketch-A-Thon and the San Diego Comic-Con

Thousands of artist, writers, fans, film makers, sculptors, actors and everyone else will be heading down to San Diego for the big San Diego Comic-Con. The convention is a week away (July 23-27, 2008) I will be found working the Cartoon Art Museum booth at MZ11 on the Mezzanine Level (the space in the back that you pass on your way upstairs to the sails pavilion and the panels

Last year it was a $10 donation for a 5.5″ x 8.5″ drawing and $25 for a 8.5″ x 11″ drawing (with exceptions for some big name artists). The museum will have one to two guest artist at the booth every hour generally from 12pm to 6pm everyday. You just come by and request a sketch and the before you know it you have a one of a kind piece of original art. The prices are great and it goes to a great cause. AND since our location is a bit hidden we need you folks to come by and say ‘Hi.”

There are still lots of open spots for more artist to come and help out by drawing, Just drop on by and set up a time to help out.

Now the big question is who is going to be drawing. Well some of the artist you know and some you do not, but they are really talented. Some of the artist scheduled are: Alex Schumacher, Debbie Huey, Loraine Sammy, Josh Ellingson, Felix Kramer, Zach Weiner, Nicholas Ivan Ladendorf, Lisa Ann Wilson, Mike Gray, Doug Gray, Loraine Sammy, Catherine Smith, Mark Todd. Weshoyot Alvitre, Scott Sava, Mark Politi, Karen Luk, Dirk Tiede, Molly Hahn, Jesse Hamm, Tanya Roberts, Tamer Youssef, Ted Rall, Catherine Smith, Urian Brown, Brian Kolm, Mark Badger, Phil Foglio, Dan Piraro, Jon “Bean” Hastings, Keith Knight, Batton Lash, Molly Hahn, Karen Luk, Dirk Tiede, Katari Sporrong….and MORE.

You will never know who will show up, so stop on by. See you there.

p.s. here is some of the art I created last year at comic-con.

Happy 53rd Anniversary Disneyland

It was on July,17 1955 that a new entertainment destination appeared…the first theme park. 53 years ago Disneyland was revealed and changed our idea of what an amusement park could be. Disneyland was opened on July,17 1955. I have not be able to go for a few years, but a trip is in order for my next big birthday.

The Disney and More blog has scans of the first ever souvenir book for Disneyland. Go check it out.

One of the best shows at the park is Fantasmic:

The classic Disney’s (Main Street) Electrical Parade (which is now at DCA):

Kid Bewoulf and the Blood Bound Oath printed books.

This last week I received my copies of Kid Beowulf and the Blood Bound Oath from author Alexis E. Fajardo. I did the cover coloring as well as watercolor rendering on the prologue pages too and all I can say is…the cover looks really sexy. The color printing is rich and has a smooth satin finish, but the characters and title also have a spot gloss on them so they stand out and shine. Wow. The prologue pages are printed in black and white, but the original art was in color so they are ready to go for a color edition. The inside pages are printed on a parchment colored paper which gives it a classy look and makes it easier to read.

The book can be purchased through Amazon or from the Author and Publisher…

Preview of the new comic “the Wicked”

My artist friend and colleague Alex Schumacher along with writer Mark Peaslee have posted a sample of their new comic, “the Wicked.”

The story is for MATURE READERS and is not appropriate for young kids. But I want to post a link to the sample since many of you ‘Big Kids’ will enjoy reading a sample of this comic book. There is Swearing, Blood, and some peeing too, but after all it is a vampire story.

Alex wrote on his blog:

First, Mark and I did not make the top 50 of the Platinum Studios Comic Book Challenge. Something about profanity and violence. Oh well, let them censor other creators. We’re doing this book our way! Unless of course someone wants to pay us loads of money to change it. Just kidding…kinda.

Next, as we still have a few publishing options open to us we are going to hold off on releasing “The Wicked” ourselves for the time being. However, in an attempt to tide over the viewing public we have posted an 11 page preview of issue #1 exclusively at our website september23rdstudios.com! Go there now!

From the official site:

Jesus thought his vampirism was unique in the world. Along and struggling, the only thing to keep him going through his isolation was his deep catholic faith…and alcohol. But a chance encounter unveils a larger plan at work, a plan that has no place for those like him.

Now on the run from powerful forces Jesus must come to terms with the revelation that his faith alone may not save him, not even from the wrath of god himself.

So if you are age 17 and older, go take a look at this sample of the comic.
