111 Minna St. Third Tuesdays/Sketch Tuesdays

On the third Tuesday of each month the ultra hip gallery space, 111 Minna St. in San Francisco has their Third Tuesdays/Sketch Tuesdays. It’s an art event that is unique and a lot of fun.

Why am I writing about it, because I got to go to my first Sketch Tuesday last night. What is it about? Well, here is some of the official text for the event:

[...] Each Third Tuesday of the month the gallery hosts an evening of live art making featuring both established and emerging Bay Area artists. Inspired by Southern Exposure’s Monster Drawing Rally, 111 Minna offers patrons the opportunity to see local artists at work and get acquainted with them. It is also a way for artists to meet each other and to be inspired by each other’s creative process.

Sketch Tuesdays offers the local arts community a place to congregate, to talk, to create and to be seen. There is *USUALLY* room for artists to just drop in and start drawing, but good seats are reserved for the invited artists.

Art is for sale at reasonable prices and will be displayed until the event closes.

So there you have it in a nutshell. A group of invited artist sit at a cluster of tables in the center of the room and create art while other artist (me) sit at the surrounding tables and create art as well. Art is placed on a wall for sale and art patrons mingle as they sip on beer and cocktails.

I got there about 6:30pm and found a seat next to fellow artist Jeff Plotkin, got a drink and started to draw.

The first piece I did was 11″ X 17″ and done in blue pencil and marker. Lots of people came over and took a look at what I was working on which allowed me to meet and talk to other artist and patrons.

I then did a couple of quick sketches that I could sell. One of a cat with a Carmen Miranda hat sold to someone who came by my table, the other one sadly did not. I was pleased how good it came out considering I was in a dark room working to thumping loud music.

The event was a lot of fun and I recommend artist come by and give it a try on the next one. A great way to do art. Just make sure you come early to get a seat and the music they play might be really loud, ear plugs might come in handy.

ComicArtFans.com

I am starting to post some of my work at ComicArtFans.com, a site for art collectors and artist. I hope in the future it will lead to some paying work as well as find a different audience for my art. Right now I have posted only a few Superhero fan pin-ups.

The work is the same as you find here, so there is no need to visit unless you want to explore the site, which is full of some amazing artwork. A great site to inspire as well as suck away precious hours of the day.

I love to search by an artist I like, for instance here is the work of Alex Toth: LINK

I just finished doing the coloring work for Alexis E. Fajardo’s Kid Beowulf and the the Blood Bound Oath. Alexis has posted images on his blog, so go check it out.

Here are two other covers I collaborated with Alexis. It’s amazing to see how far Alexis art has come from the cover for the first book (top image below) with the character on the new cover (above and at the link). I am looking forward to seeing the final book in my hands.
