2012-2-24 – 25 – 26 Image Expo at the Oakland Convention Center

I will be attending the Image Expo on February 24-25-26, 2012. I will be sharing a table with talented artist Rae Wood in Artist Alley. It’s a brand new convention, so it will be interesting to see the attendance.

IMAGE EXPO is a three-day celebration of creator-owned comics happening at the Oakland Convention Center. Image partners Robert Kirkman, Erik Larsen, Todd McFarlane, Marc Silvestri, and Jim Valentino, will be the guests of honor, appearing throughout the weekend for signings, panels, and special events. Other special guests include Image founders Rob Liefeld, and Whilce Portacio, plus the creators of today’s best creator-owned comics, including: Joe Casey, Jay Faerber, Jonathan Hickman, Ryan Ottley, Richard Starkings, Fiona Staples, and Brian K. Vaughan.

IMAGE EXPO is Northern California’s premiere comic con experience in 2012. The three-day event takes place at the Oakland Convention Center in the heart of the bustling nightlife and restaurant center of downtown Oakland, CA on February 24-25-26.

IMAGE EXPO isn’t just about Image Comics, it’s a celebration of independent creativity in comics. The exhibit floor is open to anyone who makes creator-owned comics. We’re also going to be hosting unique programming for fans, aspiring creators, and library professionals. We’ll be continuing our tradition of supporting the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund’s important work to protect creators and retailers by hosting special events including a massive benefit auction.

2011/10/01 – 2 APE: Alternative Press Expo

I will be exhibiting at APE 2011 the Alternative Comic Expo at the Concourse Exhibition Hall in San Francisco on October 1-2. I will be sharing a table with artist Karen Luk too which is going to be very cool. You can find us at table #655 near the back right side where the programing room is.

Fremont Comic Arts & Anime Teen Expo on April 25th, 2009

Looks like I will be at the Comic Arts & Anime Teen Expo in Fremont on April 25th. I have been before to help others, but this will be the first time I am going to be exhibiting and presenting. Should be fun.

Comic Arts & Anime Teen Expo is Open to all ages

Comic Arts & Anime Teen Expo is now open to all ages – our main focus, of course, is still mostly for the teen-age person BUT you can come to the event if you are under 12 if you are in the company of a parent/adult guardian and we will have some special activities for you!

The full admission price for children 6 and over, teens and adults is $9 advance/ $15 at the door registration fee and receive the canvas goodie bag courtesy of Viz Media if they are one of the first 250 registered.

Children 5 and younger are $3 and they receive a snack pack. A parent/ guardian of a child between 6 – 12 are welcome to attend for only $3 when accompanying a full admission paying child. (info on youth activities at www.fremont.gov/teens)

And this year, elementary, junior high, and high school teachers are welcome to attend for $3 if they are attending a teacher workshop at the expo. (see Teachers have Extra Class at www.fremont.gov/teens.)

A thought: This event is put on by the city of Fremont, imagine how insane and large it would be if San Francisco put one of these on as well?

Artist inspirations on-line.

It seems that this week there have been a lot of really good posts on comics and art on-line and as always I love to share them with you. Of course I am a huge fan of all these artist and highly recommend checking out their sites and blogs.

Craig Thompson (Goodby Chunky Rice, Blankets) Has posted a page from his comic-in-progress Habibi and showed how he used some scanned sketches into PhotoShop to help figure out a page layout. Sunday thoughts – 10-12-08

- Tomorrow is the Hayward Super Con. I will stop by to see my cousin who is selling some of his comic collection.

- I am home from the CAM fundraiser at PIXAR and it was a fantastic evening. So much creative in one place.

- Earlier this week the Cartoonist Conspiracy’s Comic Jam was one a great one with some real great drawings and paintings. Well have some comic online in the next few weeks I hope.

- Last weekend I was at Silicon which was a lot of fun. I was on a couple of panels and met some nice folks.

- Neil Gaiman reads his book The Graveyard Book by way of video. Looks like the whole book is there and Mr. Gaiman really reads his books well. A fun story about a graveyard of ghost who raise a orphaned baby.

- My friend Joe Borelli has a new blog to review Horror movies. Joe is one heck of a writer and is really passionate about the spooky stuff.

- Again with the Comics blog has posted CC Beck’s (creator of Captain Marvel) Fat Man. A charming and cleaver comic that was a failure, but it is hear to read on-line. He makes the hefty hero charming, heroic and fun. The big bone heroes are usually are used as comic relief, but I like Fat Man a lot.

- Alex Schumacher has some good tips for Cartoonist.

- Comic Book covers from Indonesia: Komik Indonesia.

- Swedish illustrator Mattias Adolfsson paints flying buildings. Fantastic work…check them out.

- the art of comic artist Alec Severin. His classic style drawings of horses are so full of life and his heroic art is both fantasy and reality.

-in NY an exhibit of Italian Masters of Comic Art. Cool paintings and drawings.

Update: the end of summer.

Labor day weekend has come and gone which, for many, signals the end of the Summer season.

Of late my blogging has gotten more sparse, so I have lots of catch up with news of my projects and cartooning classes (instead of just posting random art and interesting links). I know that folks like to know whats going on, but I find more personal blog post hard to do since I could say the wrong thing. After all the internet is forever and what you say can come back to haunt you. But I would also like to tell you folks a bit more about whats going on. I guess I am just am not going to bear my soul.

The classes I taught this summer were all really awesome. The kids in the four week-long classes all did an amazing jobs and really produced some amazing work. The kids created characters, drew comics, and created animation (both at the Schulz Museum and the Cartoon Art Museum.) I have posted some of the animation on my YouTube account and some of the artwork has been posted here on the blog too. The summer was really busy, but rewarding as well.

I have cartooning classes lined-up for the fall school year with many returning clients. I am hoping that my full schedule starting from a year ago will have provided me with some wisdom on how to do this teaching thing more efficiently (starting next week). Keeping your life/work flowing is always an interesting challenge.

Just last week I just got a new illustration assignment from a previous client with an exciting challenge for me. I am looking forward to working on it.

I am also working on some graphics for Silicon 2008 in San Jose CA in October which should be appearing on the website and other media fairly soon. Well, I am just finishing them up so you will just have to wait and see. But you can get to see some rough sketches I did for the images below.

Well, that is it for this post. I sure wish more folks, besides spammers, would comment. But I don’t keep my breath held too much. After all some of the most awesome artist in this world of ours get only a handful of comments too.

Dang nab it, being an artist can be hard.

Zine Fest this weekend (July 19-20, 2008)

I will be at the Zine Fest this afternoon. Last night I saw a special tie-in event at the Cartoon Art Museum where the artist read there comics aloud to projected art. What a great way to get ready for a comic show of unique voices. I will probably be hanging around with the talented folks from the Cartoonist Conspiracy like Doc Pop , Kraig Rasmussen, Mike Hales, John Cowan, Michael Capozzola and Jeff Plotkin.

What is the SF Zine Fest?

It’s a FREE annual two-day conference for independent and underground publishing. Exhibitors come from all over the West Coast, and while the focus is on zines, all walks of DIY life are represented — comics, arts and crafts, literary presses, and more. SF Zine Fest was founded in 2002 by Jenn of Starfiend Distro.

SF Zine Fest 2008 is brought to you by the hard-working folks at Family Style, Michael Capozzola, Just Visiting, John Isaacson, and many other wonderful volunteers.

Why the new location?

With the idea of exposing DIY zines, comics, and crafts to the widest possible audience, we decided to move the Fest yet again to a location where a larger and more diverse group of attendees could find us. The SF County Fair Building is over twice the size of last year’s location, and is located in beautiful Golden Gate Park, just a block off of 9th Ave. and Lincoln Way. We are expecting more attendees and exhibitors than ever this year.
The SF County Fair Building is easily accessible by bicycle (lots of parking right out front) and also by public Transit: The N train and the 6, 16BX, 43, 44, and 71 bus lines all drop you off within a couple blocks of the Fest! Parking can be more difficult, the adjacent lot is for loading and unloading ONLY. There are some paid parking lots in the nearby Inner Sunset district.

Congratulations to Boot-Campers from week 1 and 2

This is just a shout out to my students from the first two weeks of Cartoon Boot Camp at the Cartoon Art Museum. As you might have seen here at the blog, the first week’s Character Creation Camp yielded many fantastic characters. Congratulations to: Joey, Len, Rachel, Clare, Decklan, Turo, Olin, Adam, Johnny, and Keevan.

Last week was the Comic Design and Layout Camp and it was a smashing success with all the kids doing amazing comic. I will be working this week to provide an e-book for the students to print out as well as a version to read on-line. Congratulation’s to: Len, Joey, Turo, Decklan, Ben, Johnny, Dylan, Tousand, Dobik. I hope I spelled your names correctly.
