Last night was another Dr. Sketchys here in San Francisco and it featured cosplayer Quicksilver modeling as both Black Cat from Marvel Comics and Zatanna from DC Comics. It was a lot of fun. And I finally won the grand prize (well there were 2 of us) which was a nice Watercolor Sketchbook, paints, micron and a brush. Next month they are planning two sessions since the popularity has sky rocked in the last year. You can find out more on the official site HERE.
Here are some of my favorite drawings…

On Tuesday night I went again to Dr. Sketchys in San Francisco to draw model Dottie Luz. Here are most of the drawings I created. The last one was colored after-the-fact in Photoshop.

I almost forgot about my Dr. Sketchys SF drawings from March 2010. The models were the most interesting ladies delving out their own brand of community service. Their the Sisters of the Perpetual Indulgence, and they are the fabulous drag nuns of San Francisco. These ladies were really fun to draw from their pale powdered skin and striking mustaches to their sparkly eye lashes. We even had a contest to draw them with a superhero theme.
Click on the pictures to see them bigger on flickr.
“The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence® is a leading-edge Order of queer nuns. Since our first appearance in San Francisco on Easter Sunday, 1979, the Sisters have devoted ourselves to community service, ministry and outreach to those on the edges, and to promoting human rights, respect for diversity and spiritual enlightenment. We believe all people have a right to express their unique joy and beauty and we use humor and irreverent wit to expose the forces of bigotry, complacency and guilt that chain the human spirit.”
and my contest entry that I did not enter…long story. I thought the gals would love to have famous superhero’s having crushes on them. Since this and another design were drawn in my sketchbook I could not show them both and I picked another one. This one would have had a better chance to win the contest.

This past Tuesday I attended this month’s Dr. Sketchy’s SF life drawing session at 111 Minna gallery. This sessions models were the ladies of publicbikes.com. Click for a bigger image.
There was…. “Meli Burgueño, lovely blogger of bikesandthecity.blogspot.com/”
and “Constance Cavallas, awesome builder of Pelicans and wheel lacer”
and “Amanda Lanker, fearless leader of the Pushbike Ladies Ride”
The drawing contest this time was two 20 min drawings of the girls moving furniture with their bikes. I did two with one of them (the one with Color) winning a consolation prize. This is my 4th win. Ahead of me was a cool drawings done on the iPad and the winner was by my friend George Webber.

The other night at Dr. Sketchys San Francisco I tried something new…to draw a comic from the life drawing models who where the Bay Area Derby Girls. I found that using the gestures (2 min poses) maybe was too fast and since there were 5 rotating models it made it hard to form a story. So taking that into account, here is my final result. See photos of the model session on the official blog HERE.

Last night I attended my first Dr. Sketchy’s San Francisco session. If you like to draw from interesting models then this is the place for you. Dr. Sketchy’s was started in New York city to provide drawing models that were different then what you would find in art school.
From the official site:
Dr. Sketchy’s is the little Brooklyn event that became a movement. Founded in 2005 by artist Molly Crabapple, Dr. Sketchy’s asked a simple question. Why can’t drawing naked people be sexy?
Here’s our attempt at an answer.
We combed New York to find the most beautiful burlesque dancers, the most bizarre circus freaks, and the most rippling hunks of man. Then, every other Saturday, we let you draw them for three hours. Interspersed with posing are comedy skits and ridiculous drawing contests (best left handed drawing? Best incorporation of a woodland animal?) where you can win booze or prizes.
The evening was a blast with the lovely Bombshell Betty who was sexy and spunky all at the same time. There was even a contest to draw Betty with a cartoon or comic character. I drew the recently deceased Martian Manhunter, but no one knew who he was in the original un-colored drawing. The evening ended with Betty giving us her humorous burlesque dance routine as she twirled her pasties and patted her head and rubber her stomach at the same time.
I am definitely going back next month if it fits my schedule.
Here is what I created:
1 min poses

2 min poses

5 min poses

10 min poses

another 5 min pose
A 5 min pose by our hostess Tink (aka Jessica Whiteside)
There are lots of Dr. Sketchy’s all over the world, including 35 US cities. Check out the official site’s link page to find one near you.
