Cartoon Art Camp – Day #3

Well half way through the week long Cartoon Art Camp at the Cartoon Art Museum. The kids today jump right in and worked hard to design there characters. We did some work to explore way to find different character possibilities through combining ideas. I was also going to give a lesson on drawing faces, but it seems to work better to just let them work on a project and help them more one on one where they need. It’s been very fun and it looks like I might be teaching another week long session in August. More news will be available in the next few weeks.

I find it so refreshing how original the ideas are: a robot duck, a water warrior, a snake women, and many more. I can’t wait to show you how nice all of it is turning out. I even created my own character.

Images on Friday….be here.

Cartoon Art Camp – Day #2

Well, day #2 of my week long class at the cartoon art museum was excellent. One student left, but another one arrived to take there place. We worked on creating figures using basic shapes and then added costumes based on reference images. Lots of fun.

Cartoon Art Camp – Day #1

Today was the first day of my week long class I am teaching at the Cartoon Art Museum. I have a great bunch of kids who seem to be very talented.

Today we worked on our shape basics, featuring the the standard 3 head high but with a punk rock twist. Richard Becker, a very talented illustrator and teacher suggested a few cool new assignments to try that worked out great. And we ended with a full model turn around from each of the kids. Tomorrow we take the next step to draw poses and actions, working towards more realistic figures.

If any of my students are reading this, Great Job!

Lawyers for the Arts (California)

In this complex world of copyrights, contracts, and confusion where is an artist suppose to turn? Well, here in California are the Lawyers for the Arts. Definitely a good resource to bookmark for those of us in the Sunshine State.

California Lawyers for the Arts is a non- profit service organization which provides lawyer referrals, dispute resolution services, educational programs, publications and a resource library to people in the creative arts and arts organizations. Founded in 1974 by lawyers and artists, C.L.A.’s programs and services are designed to help artists understand and apply legal concepts.

Disney news and happenings

This weekend the revised version of the Pirates of the Carabbian ride at Disneyland opens in time for the movie premier. They have taken the original ride an added Capt. Jack Sparrow into the adventure as well as some other elements from the movie and updated sound and effects. I want to go, but can’t. Makes me sad.

This French site has some promo Hi-Res photos of the new elements in the attraction as well as a making of quicktime movie.

On another note, the Tiki-Room at Disneyland is now 43 years old and Tiki-Talk is now talking about it.

On other news, LaughingPlace.com reported that a 2D animated feature is in the works at Disney Animation, thanks in part by JohnLasseter. All I can say is….wow. Very exciting.

Sketch 6-22-06 Bug-Duck

This sketch I did with a friend of mine while hanging out in SF today. We used a live variation of combing two random elements into one character. I wrote a type of character (works best with more general terms. Ie: Pirate, Clown, Chicken, etc) on the top of a page in my sketchbook, and my friend did the same. We reveal our words and combine them together then do a drawing as fast as possible. It is lots of fun and helps move you out of your comfort zones…sometimes.

I explain more about this exercise in the learning section. It also contains my own random generator to play solo at home.
