Tom Thordarson’s Tiki fantasies

Tom Thordarson paints beaches and sea and tikis, lots of tikis, with paintings that offer a surreal – cartoony version of tropical reality. Having once worked at Disney imagineering, I wonder what inspiration the Tiki-Room has for him. Of course living in Hawaii might also be part of it.

The paintings are great and have a fantasy, deglow, dark ride vibe that makes me want to jump into them.

The artist writes:

All of the paintings in this series of Hawaiian escape dwellings have one thing in common. They represent a particular person’s or couple’s perception of an ideal tropical fantasy refuge. Some perceptions catalyzed the spirit of youth, romance or tranquility. Others radiate adventure, living on the edge or an ultimate adult playground. Individual, yet sharing a common thread.

Check out the cool images at his Thor Stor.

I found the link to his site on tiki-room.com

Artist in Residence at the Charles Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa, CA – Part #2

Ok, here are some more photos from when I was at the Schulz Museum as the Artist in Residence.

First off is a photo of me and Jon Stelter who does the on-line strip Fletcher Apartments. We had a good chance to talk shop and draw a bit (notice the drawings in the photo).

Here is a drawing Jon did for me of one of the cast of his comic, Bob.

The rest of the photos have been provided by Brook Clyde, the official museum photographer. I was very pleased how good the photos came out, and I don’t look like a tottal loon.

Comics Review begins Myspace-esc service

The Comics Review has started a MySpace type space for comic/cartoon creators. So I thought, why not sign up. HERE IT IS, my comics reporter space. I figure that any publicity is good publicity. It has the posibility to become a good area for artist in the same way that music is king on Myspace…er…or not.

One thing that is different from Myspace is the lack of annoying ads so far. But if you don’t mind them, then visit my Myspace page as well. Myspace all of a sudden has a lot of talented artist with areas on it: Fred Hembeck, Baton Lash, and Jeff Plotkin to name a few. My myspace is: http://www.myspace.com/atomicbearpress

So why not be my “friend” on one of these sites, just remember to book mark this spot right here, since this is where all the news will appear first.

Artist in Residence at the Charles Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa, CA – Part #1

Yesterday, June 10, 2006 I was honored to be the Artist-in-Residence at the Charles Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa, CA. The museum was gracious host and I enjoyed a chance to sit down and talk to folks as well as do some drawing too. Oddly, I was suppose to be working on my Graphic Novel, but I had too much of a good time meeting folks.

Here is a photo of me out side the Warm Puppy where I found a sign that featured my appearance at the museum. Behind me is one of the Woodstock figures that have been painted different ways for a charity event.

Here is me in front of the entrance, ready to go draw pictures.

Another sign that talks about my appearance.

Here I point out some details on the cover I recently did for Kid Beowulf and the Song of Roland. This is the “Time Lapse” movie that I posted here recently here on the production log.

Here I am talking to these two charming ladies who purchased the Ambition Studios Anthology as well as the Guide to Other Worlds. In the Guide there is a black page for a new drawing, here are the two I did.

Here is a drawing that I was using to describe how to combine two animals into one. Any guesses which two I used.

This is the end of part one, more photos coming soon.

Me. Today. Schulz Museum. Santa Rosa. (June 10, 2006)

I know it’s very last minuet to post here, but I will be at the Charles Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa TODAY (June 10, 2006) from 1-3. I will be drawing and chatting the whole time. Mostly working on model designs for my graphic novel, Beyond the Great Chimney. Of course, if you can’t make it, I will have some photos and such tomorrow night, on my Production Log.
