New Artwork: Drippy Watercolors

This afternoon I got to play with some watercolor paints in a fun way. I was basically puddling the paint and then tilting the painting surface and blending in more. I then laid them flat with sprinkles of salt and let them dry. I then brushed off the salt and drew details and brushed on more paint.

I am really liking the results.

Telephone Robot

The talented artist Becky Dreistadt AKA PocketOwl, asked on Deviant Art for ideas for drawings. Mine was a 50′s Robot combined with a Telephone. Check it out HERE.

Becky is also the artist on the awesome web comic Tiny Kitten Teeth. Read it on-line NOW. It’s really cool and visually striking.

Artist inspirations on-line.

It seems that this week there have been a lot of really good posts on comics and art on-line and as always I love to share them with you. Of course I am a huge fan of all these artist and highly recommend checking out their sites and blogs.

Craig Thompson (Goodby Chunky Rice, Blankets) Has posted a page from his comic-in-progress Habibi and showed how he used some scanned sketches into PhotoShop to help figure out a page layout. His work is so amazingly beautiful. Check it out HERE: http://blog.dootdootgarden.com/2009/03/17/overexert/

Tony DiTerlizzi has posted his progress of creating the third and final cover for his series Beyond the Spiderwick. I love his work. His creature looks like Ursula’s pet eels sort of. Check it out: http://diterlizzi.com/blog/2009/03/18/wyrm-king-cover/

Ruben Procopio posted some of his cover work of The Phantom. I love his rough sketches as well as the finished work. Here: http://maskedavengerstudios.blogspot.com/2009/03/latest-on-phantom.html

Here Steve Rude has posted a video of him inking a comic cover:

Disneyland in a 1960′s ‘Ford Times’ with paintings instead of photos

Vintage Disneyland Tickets Blog

I saw this over at the Vintage Disneyland Tickets blog, it’s from the “Ford Times” from September 1960. Instead of photos there are watercolor paintings of San Francisco and Disneyland that are really well done.

Check out their blog post here.

OK folks, here is some new art I have done. These were done in watercolor, then photoshoped for cleanup and color. I have been trying to work more graphically, inspired by the work of Michael Cho. He does his inks as shading, but not outlines per-say and then uses flat color to help shape the design.

Recent paintings

crocgle-8-08

Hey all, here are some recent paintings I did. Enjoy. The first one was inspired by the work of this artist, though it might not look like it. I started with a sketch in orange and then I did the lines on top. This watercolor painting is from the Southwest Airline magazine I got on my trip down to San Diego. This creature was a piece I did while teaching one of my classes at a Youth Center in San Francisco. The animals were suggestions by the young adults I work with. The pirate was drawn completely in watercolor, starting with some blue constructions lines that are still there. The cats and parrot were done with patches of color and then the outlines were drawn on top of those.
