Just cool. If I ever try oil paints I would like to try this technique.

A good quote
The enemy of art is the absence of limitations.
Orson Welles
This quote is the last on-screen item we saw at the Cartoon Art Museum Pixar fund raiser last night. It was used in regard to a cool new animated short that will be on the Ratatouille (Rat-a-too-ee) DVD when it comes out this fall. All I can say is that the project was awesome. We were asked not to blog about it yet, and I will comply (until reviews start coming in on the DVD)

Watercolor paintings
Here are a few watercolor paintings I did this Monday.
My goal is to get to the point where I can produce quality painted art fast with the hope of using the skills in both commercial and commissioned work. So when you guys come to my table at Silicon or Wondercon you can commission me to paint something for you.
Most of these painting use no under drawing in pencil. It’s all paint.

They were painted on 5.5″ x 8.5″ bristol board which is a lot like a hot press watercolor paper.

They look a little washed out because the paper is really a bright white and there is no sizing or texture to keep the paint from absorbing into the paper fast.
The process ends up being more like drawing at times, which I like.
This landscape was done buy painting first and then outlining with a pen over top.

Re-inking and Re-drawing Kirby’s THOR
At one of the latest Cartoonist Conspiracy meeting we took a blue line printouts of Jack Kirby’s THOR and inked over it. Then we re-drew it too. You can see the examples on Doc Pop’s blog. With a lot of older Marvel comics the original dialog is cluttered and overdone, of course our corrections were kind of strange at times.
Do you know what I drew? (on the re-drawing I did the second and last one) Challenging.

Lark Pien, artist in residence
Lark Pien is a very talented lady. She has created everything from Cartoons to Fine Art and all of it has that illusive appeal that many artist wish to achieve.
I ran into her last Sunday when she was the artist in residence at the Asian Art Museum. She was talking with kids and adults who were visiting the museum and working on some beautiful small paintings.
She also had her sketchbook open and I snapped a picture of some of her development sketches for a new project. She also had a finished painted page for a possible new Long Tail Kitty book for a local publisher.
I can’t say enough how much I admire Lark’s work and I look forward to some of the other new projects she has in the pipeline. AND the best part is that Lark will have her own art exhibit at the Cartoon Art Museum next month which will be cool.
As an added bonus here is a photo of my cousin Ken and I with a statue of Astro Boy.
