Sketches: Wendell

Here are some sketches of Wednell from BTGC. For most of you who have read the two single issues, you have only seen him in his human form, but in the start of the graphic novel he is still a forest creature. “What?” you ask dose that mean. Well, I’m not telling much more right now(have to buy the book next year when it’s done), but it has lead to some fun possiblities I did not see. So a bit of the later chapters of the book will probably be altered based on some of these ideas. AND THAT IS GOOD, it means that new exciting story elements that will hopfully have you care for the character.

The one thing I am trying to decided is what the race of creatures are called. They are a cross of a rodent and bull dog. I have played with combinations like: ouseull, mull, dogbull, mousebull, etc.

If anyone has any ideas, please comment or email me. If I use your idea I will send you a one-of-a-kind original drawing.

Oskar Fischinger’s Avant-Garde Animation on NPR

On the NPR show Day to Day there is a piece of the great German Animator, Oskar Fischinger.

At a time when most people equated animation with Mickey Mouse, Oskar Fischinger’s abstract films were taking animation in a new, challenging direction.

He produced some amazing animation set to music work (including Disney’s Fantasia), which can be seen at the NPR link. Check it out. His work has just been released on DVD.

Mystery solved thanks to youtube.com

Ever have a childhood memory of something you saw on TV, but could find no evidence of it anywhere… even on the web? As a kid I remember a commerical for a live Bugs Bunny stage show that featured DC superhero charcters. Sometimes when I wanted to play detective I tried to google for it, but I found nothing…till today.

Quite by accident I found a video clip while looking at some old toy commericals on YouTube.com. There was a preview image with what looked like the mascot versions of Bugs and Marvin the Martian. So I watched the clip and found that low and behold there was a brief moment of Wonder Women, Batman and Robin as part of Bugs Bunny in Space. Mystery solved! You can watch the clip HERE, it’s in the center of the movie.

BTW The clip is from 1980.

NOTE: the site is in French and does contain some imagery that is not suitable for young kids (nudity, heavy violence)

Evolution of the Speechballoon

For those of us who do comics, there is a science to how dialog can be displayed for the reader. My sister sent me an interesting link to the Evolution of Speechballoons. It’s really fascinating. Check it out.
