I spent two days this week working on sketching in San Francisco.
Many of the museums in San Francisco are free on the first Tuesday of every month, so I chose to visit the Legion of Honor and the Asian Art Museum.
At the Legion of Honor there is a new show on French Jewelry. Not exactly my cup of tea but there were some impressive pieces in the Art Nouveau and Art Deco sections. They also had a selection of book and poster art from France that represented the decadent generations. This area was fantastic to see and I will post some links to some great illustration laster this weekend.
Most of my sketches ended up being notes on ideas for my novel and artist I wanted to look up, so I won’t be showing them right now. To get to the Legion of Honor you can take the #38 MUNI bus that runs from down town: up market and then turns on Geary St. You get off at 33rd ave and walk a block down and walk up a hill to the museum. The walk takes about 8-10 minuets.

After that I scooted off to the Asian Art Museum in downtown SF at the Civic Center . The museum has an amazing collection of work and it’s easy to spend a few hours looking around. You can easily visit the museum by taking BART or MUNI.
If you like an inexpensive lunch, I recommend Saigon Sandwiches which is just a few blocks up Larkin St. from the Asian Art Museum. The area is full of Vietnamese restaurants and Saigon Sandwiches is a great cheep eat. The sandwich consist of a roll filled with your choice of filling (chicken, pork, meatballs, paté) and accompanied by fresh carrot, cilantro, halapinos peppers, and a sweet dressing. The sandwiches are only $2.50 each and there can be a long wait sometimes to get them because of the popularity. But boy are they good.
On Wednesday I went with my friend Toni to the SF-Zoo which is free on the first Wednesday of the month to draw animals. Here is one of my favorite sketch book pages.
This was my first time to the zoo and my reaction is that it is a work in progress. Areas of the zoo are very old and of need of work and the paths are hard to figure out, but some of the new areas are well designed and included some amazing theming. I will post some photos soon.
