Day 4/5 – Cartoon Art Camp: Character Creation

I know this post is late coming. I was trying to get my handouts avalible in downloadable PDF form, but got distracted by other things.

For Day 4 we focused on developing our own characters. The students had to make a choice to what they wanted to draw for the next two days (Thursday and Friday). The characters were wildly different and diverse, including: a manga-esque half devil/half angel, an urban Puss in Boots living in Canada, a human-dolphin-eagle hybrid, a precocious kid with the power to remove bad emotions from a person, a teen superhero, and a humanoid gryphon pirate. Lots of great ideas.

I spent a good chunk of the time looking for reference material, to help the kids be better able to visualize their characters.

For Day 5 we started with last minute planning of what our charcters would look like then we began to do a final piece using a blue pencil first, then inking the lines with a selection of pens.

We were joined by local Graphic Novel author Alexis Fajardo who talked about his work and then did a bang-up job on drawing a strange creature that the class came up with. To check it out, visit his blog HERE.

After the kids had inked their drawings, I photocopied the art so they could color on a copy and keep their original.

Images are coming soon, I promise.

NOTE: Some of you students had emails that did not work. Feel free to email me with your email if you have not recieved anything from me.
