Alcatraz, goodbye!

As some of you might know, I worked for the last two months on Alcatraz Island National Park. Yesterday was my last day, so I thought it was time for me to share my thoughts and experiences.

I took the job to get out of the house and get some income coming in. And Alcatraz seemed to be an exciting challenge to get me of my butt. So I applied, and….did not get the job. But the person hired did not work out and I was given another chance. I worked with Summer and Patrick to do the GSR and SEAT Tram. Half of the day I would drive those who could not walk up to the cell-house for medical or health reasons. The other half I would be in charge of getting guests on and off the boat. Both of them offered a nice learning curve that gave me a chance to try things that usually make me a little nervous and require responsibility and a good backbone.

Here is the SEAT tram parked at the top of the hill by the cell-house:

Particularly driving up the hill with 19 people in a battery powered tracker was a bit harrowing at times. But like anything, the more you do it, the easier it is. I also got to be the guy who had to tell tourist that they missed a boat. Some people seem to forget all manners and responsibility when on vacation. At first I would feel really bad for the folks who would miss a meeting or plan, but then when it happened more then once every day, I did not feel so bad.

The rangers on the island are an inspiring and dedicated group. They are doing a service that all Americans can be proud of as they help us to enjoy our national parks. Here is Ranger Benny, probably explaining to the kids why throwing rocks and newly born sea gulls is wrong:

The island itself is a beautiful place, even with the fog, rain and wind that make up a summer in San Francisco. There is a feeling of mystery, history, and natural beauty. Unpredictable and exciting. Here is the dock area, right before I left for the last time at 6:30 pm.:

So it is with a heavy heart that I move on to my next adventure, and so I wish to say a fond word of thanks for the folks of Alcatraz Island. Here are a few more of the people I worked with. Thanks everybody!
