Blackbeards Wake

Even an artist has to take a break and have a good time, so I went to Tales of the Seven Sea’s Blackbeard’s Wake. It was at a Pirate themed pizza restaurant and featured over 40 pirates in full regalia, a pirate band that featured authentic pirate songs and sea shanties, and a Black Elephant gift exchange. It was a lot of fun, and thanks to the kindness of Elisabeth, Jackson and Mark, I was able to look the part with a cool shirt.

I ‘stoled’ a cool horn shaped pewter tankard as part of the Black Elephant gift exchange and made it with out anyone ‘stealing’ it from me. It’s so cool.(picture coming later)

The night ended with rousing drinking songs and cake.

Fun.

my 12 hr comic book jam

This week I participated in a 12 hr comic book jam with my friends TJ, Larry, and Toni. It’s a halved version of the famous 24 hour comic book challenge. It was on Friday from 11am to 11pm.

The goal was to create 12 finished pages of comic book art for a complete story. I did not achieve that goal, but I was very pleased with what came out of it. The idea of the challenge is to push yourself and to see what you are capable of. I came away feeling that I can do quite a bit.

Below you can see, first, the penciled pages that I had finished 7pm. Then below that are 3 almost finished inked pages. I also did the boarders for all the pages before the end as well, but there not shown.

In a few of the panels my hero Brennus changes his proportions. But I really liked how cool the inking on him was. I also did very little research, so he might only look like a viking to me.

I think it would be cool to do they every few months, just to keep myself improving.

You can read my 24 hour comic from 2005, the Synthetic Owl, HERE.

Hama sculpture

This is so cool, Alexis Fajardo (author of Kid Beowulf) has commissioned a maquette of Hama the Pig and will be selling them at Comic-Con 2007 in San Diego. The 3d work is by sculptor Pam Drucker looks dead-on to Alexis art and is very slick.

Tezuka: The Marvel of Manga photos

I went to the free day at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco to check out the Tezuka: Marvel of Manga show and was not disappointed.

I was at the museum at opening. The photo below is about 15 before hand, by the time the doors opened there were 50 people in line.

Here is the queue for the show at opening. The colors are bright and exciting.

You can not take pictures inside, but the show was really fascinating. Tezuka pretty much created what we think of as Manga and Anime and produced many original characters like Astro Boy and Kimba the white lion. A warning for folks with kids, there is some Adult content in some of the work including sex (both heterosexual and homosexual) and violence. But his work has a timeless style that seems universal and should be enjoyable to those who do not know much about Japanese cartooning.

When you go to the exhibit there is an excellent subtitled documentary on Tezuka’s animated productions. The influence of the Disney studio is very strong in all his work, but he was able to make it into his own. I hope they release more of his work here in the US.

There is also a Manga Lounge sponsored by Viz Comics which has a mock up of a fan boy/girl’s bedroom in Japan, as well as a drawing table with hot to draw books, books to read and trailers from films playing. And Yes the room is really red.

Now we have to say good buy to Astro Boy, may he delight many this summer.

BUT WAIT… while your there you also have to check out – Yoshitoshi’s Strange Tales: Woodblock Prints from Edo to Meiji. Some really amazing work and it’s fascinating to see how the artist work went from more traditional to more western in style. Great stuff.

the Mighty Thor says Support the Hero Initiative

At Supercon 2007, this weekend I had the pleasure of sharing the space with the Hero Initiative folks.
HERO’s goal is to help older artist, the ones responsible for shaping comics to what we know know with assistance and financial support.

Since its inception, The Hero Initiative (Formerly known as A.C.T.O.R., A Commitment To Our Roots) has had the good fortune to grant over $200,000 to the comic book veterans who have paved the way for those in the industry today.

The Hero Initiative is the first-ever federally chartered not-for-profit corporation dedicated strictly to helping comic book creators in need. Hero creates a financial safety net for yesterdays’ creators who may need emergency medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work. It’s a chance for all of us to give back something to the people who have given us so much enjoyment.

Dan Brereton (creator of the Nocturnals)was doing sketches for a donation to the organization, so I got the cool drawing below of the Mighty Thor (Marvel Comics).

So if you love comics (as a fan or as an artist) why not purchase one of there comics or donate a little something to help those who have paved the way for some amazing comic book adventures.
