CAM artist in residence – Richard Becker

A great chance to meet one heck of a talented artist in person. He does it all: watercolors, oils, charcoal, cartoons and comic. here is the official press release…

Cartoonist in Residence – Richard Becker: Saturday, July 21st, 2pm to
4pm

The Cartoon Art Museum hosts painter Richard Becker as part of its
ongoing Cartoonist-in-Residence program. Visit the museum between 2pm
and 4pm to meet Richard and talk with him about his artwork. This event
is free and open to the public.

Richard Becker is an American painter, best known for his pirates art.
In 1992 Becker created “Black Swan Press” and started publishing his
first “Blood Thirsty Pirate Tales”, a comic book series. Becker wrote
and illustrated “Draw The Marvel Comics Super Heroes” for Klutz Press a
year later. He is currently producing another comic book series, “Pirate
Tales” and has a new book “The Pirate Art Book-Seventeen Years of
Drawing Sea Rovers”. Anyone with an interest in black and white pirate
illustrations should find a wealth of booty in this fine collection.

The Cartoon Art Museum hosts a different professional cartoonist in its
galleries as part of its Cartoonist-in-Residence program each month.
Museum patrons see cartoonists at work on their latest projects and
learn everything they ever wanted to know about cartoonists–but were
afraid to ask. Past featured Cartoonists-in-Residence include Paul
Madonna (All Over Coffee), Keith Knight (K Chronicles, (th)ink), Erik
Kriek (Gutsman Comics), Michael Jantze (The Norm) and Grady Klein (The
Lost Colony) among many others

…. woot. Looks like fun.

BTGC update 6-07

I was reminded by a reader of my log that I have not posted much about my Graphic Novel lately. This is in part that I have been busy with some other projects: Teaching cartooning at a youth center, freelance illustration and graphics, private teaching, etc. So I though it was time to post a work in progress photo.

The above image is a page from Beyond the Great Chimney on 11″ x 17″ velum bristol board and is a combination of mechanical pens, brush pens and gray washes. My goal is to balance the pen and ink work with elements that are strictly painted. This is partially inspired by the work of Charles Vess who’s work always captivates me. I also have been struggling to keep everything simple, something that can be hard to do when you want a detailed world.

I will try to post more work in progress pictures in the next few weeks leading up to Comic-Con 2007. I love feed back, so comment away. It only takes a second to do.

Horus, Prince of the Sun (subtitled) 1/10

This Japanese film from the past features scene design by the talented Hayao Miyazaki.

The animation is solid (the fight with the wolfs in this clip is a good example), but the backgrounds are lack-luster at times in comparison of later films that feature a looser watercolor style.

A fun movie to check out. NOTE: This is only the first part.

Comic-con 2007 request from the Cartoon Art Museum

Are you an Artist going to San Diego Comic-Con 2007? The Cartoon Art Museum is working to line up artist who are willing to donate 30 to 60 minuets of there time at the booth as an “artist is residence.” This is a great opportunity for an artist who is just visiting or an artist who wants a break from there booth or table.

Here is the deal…

Hope you’re doing well. I’m in the process of putting together some programming for the Cartoon Art Museum’s table at Comic-Con, and wanted to see if you’d be able to put aside some time to sign and sketch at our booth.

My current plan is to have a rotating “Cartoonist In Residence” slot at our table, which would be filled by any artist who’s willing to sit at the table for 30 to 60 minutes and draw sketches for convention-goers, work on their own materials, and basically help bring more visitors to our table (and, hopefully, to the museum itself).

We’re also looking for donations of signed books and comics so that we can offer “new” material for sale in addition to our usual backstock (which hasn’t been replenished in several years). Donations can either be mailed to CAM ahead of time or picked up by a CAM representative at the convention.

Thanks very much for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Best,

Andrew

Thanks to Flooble.com I have cool expanding sidebars to keep everything clean. You just click on the + and the content expands, click the – close it back up. (you might have to scroll down a bit to see them, but there so Cool, Very Cool. It was fairly easy to add the Javascript to a blog, except if you have more then one, the number for each section has to be changed.

They also make a cool sticky note script.
