Funny Animal SuperHeros

While in today’s grity, dark, and sometimes way to realistic world of superhero comics there is little room for wacky muscle bound rabbits and mice, they once delighted kids and big kids (read adult) in the distant past. Being an artist I love wacky superheros. They allow us to enjoy the superhero gerne without worrying about the reality in the outside world. So I have went out and found some links to these furry heros of the past for you to enjoy. I have also included some who originated on TV.

Raggedy Andy gets a make over. (pictures)

Today was the Raggedy Ann and Friends: kids day at the Cartoon Art Museum. The exhibit was cureated by Andrew Talbot(raggedyandrew.com) who is major Raggedy collector. The show features many pieces from Raggedy creator, Johnny Gruelle

Raggedy Ann and Friends:
The Art of Johnny Gruelle
June 26 – November 8, 2004

Join the Cartoon Art Museum in celebrating the amazing artwork of Johnny Gruelle, best known for creating Raggedy Ann and Andy, the beloved rag doll characters that have remained popular since their respective introductions in 1915 and 1920. Few people realize that Gruelle (1880–1938) was also a versatile and prolific newspaper and magazine cartoonist and illustrator, and the author/illustrator of many books unrelated to the Raggedy characters.

The event was lots of fun for the kids and the adults too. I read stories to kids and helped with the arts and craft tables.

One exercise was to make a paper and cloth dolls. But some of the little boys where shying away from anything with the word “doll” in it. Maybe we should have called them paper Action Figures. So I took it to make some more manly ones. Below: Andy the mountain man, He-Andy, and Raggedy Hulk.

The whole day was fun and a great success. Check out more at the Cartoon Art Museum.

Beyond the Great Chimney #2 & #3 update

In working towards getting issue #2 of Beyond the Great Chimney to market, I have contact a few companies to find out a new way to economically print the comics with out the large order that a company like Quebacore would charge. If you know of any good printing places, please email me through the contact page HERE

Last night I scanned in the first 15 rough draft pages of issue #3. After each rough page is scanned, I add text with Photoshop. I find that to make the text standout I use the outline layer style to give the text a white outline.

The story is going to go a little faster then the first two issues, with lots more action and humor too. Also, the third issue will be 36 pages vs. the traditional 24 pages of a regular comic, since the story needs more time to finish up. And then issue # 4-5 will cover….whoops getting ahead of myself.

Free Fonts

I just discovered a wonderful collection of fonts: Harold’s Fonts. The creator has gone to alot of trouble to recreate many retro fonts from the past, like the Ho Jo lettering. Just follow the links to the free fonts, and maybe consider buying some of his others. Very nicely done. Retro stuff ROCKS!

Beyond the Great Chimney #2 update

Well, some of you might be wondering, “Where is issue #2 of Beyond the Great Chimney?”

I finished up everything in time for Comic-Con in San Diego. I rushed it off to have some nice copies made at Kinko’s in downtown Oakland CA. The copies were very good, but expensive to make. I do have the say that the folks at the City Center Kinko’s did a wonderful job and where very helpful. And of course, as soon as you print it you find lots of silly mistakes too. I gave out about 15 copies to other artist, and I sold a few as well.

Which brings us to the status of BTGC#2. I am trying to find a printer who can do a well-priced short run. (If you know one, email me.) I am still small potatoes for now, and having 1200 issues to try to sell is a bit much.

On a high note I am starting to add the dialog to the mock up of BTGC #3 so I can have my proofreaders look it over. I have learned in the last two issues that I am an artist and writing is something I can do only OK. And it hold me back from getting done, so now I am going to work on the text first. Then there is no confusion on the artwork as well.

So if everything goes well, Wondercon 2005 in February should have me with lots of stuff. Plus some new surprises too.

Please hold your horses and drop me an email. Happy to hear comments from my buddies in cyberspace.

Boarding Bluth

On Don Bluth’s website, DonBluth.com there is mention that Don has written a book on Story Boarding for animation.

While there are plenty of books on animation and storyboarding, and most of them give the same information, this one should be different since it might have examples from some of Bluth’s movies like the Secret of NIMH, Anastasia, All Dogs go to Heaven, Dragons Lair, Space Ace, American Tail, Land Before Time, and Titan A.E.

Another thing to check out at the site is Don Bluth’s classical animation academy. It has some neat examples of storyboards featuring a character that looks sorta like Dirk the Daring from Dragons Lair laser disk game. See it HERE

The book should be available September 29th, 2004. Check it out HERE
