The words of a synthetic man

Sometimes we get inspirational reminders in odd places. Here is a scene with the Marvel Comics Avenger’s Scarlet Witch and Vision. From Issue #31 by Kurt Busiek and George Pérez.

First thoughts on the "Corpse Bride"

I just saw the Corps Bride, the new animated film by Tim Burton and co. I won’t do a whole review, since I want to take time to think about stuff first. It is not perfect, as the JHM review stated, but you will still have a great movie viewing time.

Wow, and wow again. This movie lifts the bar for Stop Motion with excellent acting and beautiful subtlety, craftsmanship, and uniqueness.

Pros:
The animation and acting is top notch.
There is at least one stand out song, “Remains of the Day,” and the first one, sung by the parents, helps move the story.
The plot that will keep you on your toes and guessing how it will turn out.
The main characters grow and mature and are very likeable.
A villain who you know will bite-it in the end, but will keep you on your seat waiting for it to happen.
Some very laugh-out-loud funny moments.
The action scenes are exciting.
The crafting is amazing with a certain quality that a CGI film will never have.
No stupid pop culture references, this movie will be good in the future and will not be dated so much.

Cons:
Two of the songs did not feel like they help the story move forward, and one important scene seems to missing some emotional bases to make it believable. (But it all gets back on track by the end)
If you don’t like Danny Elfman music, you won’t like the music/songs in the film.

The problems of youth

One snag, artistically, has been to show characters in the past as teenagers. I have a habit of making them look too old. This is probably because when you get older, you get more interesting, broken in.

Here is a recent model I did of Agacon:

Your thoughts?

To GN or not to GN – I need your advice!

I am in a muddle. I have two options for finishing the last chapter (#3) of “the Trip Beyond” story arc for Beyond the Great Chimney.

A) Finish the story in one more single issue (48 pages).

or

B) compleate the story as a Graphic Novel (GN, 104+ pages). It would be double the material and include extras as well including essays and sketches.

What do you folks on the web think? Don’t feel shy about commenting. HELP.

NOTE: I have recived many responses which are in a later post HERE

Ron and Jon on the Animation Podcast

Ron Clements and Jon Musker are responsible for some of the best new Disney animated films: The Great Mouse Detective, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules, and Treasure Planet. They directed some of Disney’s most successful movies, and Disney let them go! Bad Disney!

The Animation Pod Cast has part one of an interview with the two master artist.

This will be a brief detour from the Nik Ranieri series since today marks the first day that Ron and John no longer work at Disney. After 32 years for Ron and 28 years for John, there’s a big hole in the heart of the feature animation building. I’m posting for two groups: those who have never met Ron and John – enjoy; those who know Ron and John – I thought hearing their voices might make the halls seem a little less empty today.

I still remember seeing their first movie, the Little Mermaid, for the first time. I was swept away and left the theater singing the songs. They definitly inspired me artisticly, and brought animation to where we are now. It was a magic time that is now gone. Thank Ron and Jon for all the magic your brought to us.

SaveD Disney.com

Now that Roy Disney has shut down his site, SaveDisney.com (used to cause a lot of hell for CEO Mike Eisner), Animator Tom Hignite has started SavedDisney.com. His goal is to support and continue the tradition of Drawn Animation as well as keep fans abreast of what the Disney Corp. is doing.

The author writes:

As for my personal agenda beyond my own respect and love of Disney, I have undertaken the mission to nurture a traditional 2-D animation studio in hopes of keeping that American tradition alive. This site will also keep you apprised of developments as we endeavor to keep the magic alive and growing.

Going to that "Magic Kingdom in the Sky"

There are lots of views on what happens when we die. To a cowboy it might be going to that big ranch in the sky, or a chef might go to the big kitchen in sky. But what about a fan of Disney stuff? Well here is the musical answer to that, a MP3 called “Magic Kingdom in the Sky.” It’s a gospel inspired ditty to the church of a mass media conglomerate.

It’s made possible by the Star of the North Disney enthusiasts, a branch of the NFFC (National Fantasy Fan Club).
