Our (Late) 1 year Anniversary

On August 4th I started this News and Notes blog. It has been an outlet for me to express myself artistically, as I struggle though projects, and to celebrate the things that intrigue and excite me.

I hope to be able to share many more years of experiences here on the web with you. Please enjoy your visit.

Cartoonist Conspiricy Sketches

The Cartoonist Conspiracy (San Francisco group) meets twice a month, second week and last week of the month. The night was made up of everyone feeling a bit slow. But I did the sketches. I seem to do the best sketches when I least expect it.

The next meetings is Sept 8, 2005.

A new look for the News and Notes section.

I spent some time today to re-vamp the blogs format. There are now links below the header where they are easy to find, and visual links to my latest projects.

What do you guys think?

Format result

On my last post I talked about experimenting with how big to draw art for Issue #3 of BTGC. Requirements:

- Since I use watercolor washes, the art has to be a size that showcases the style in the best possible way.

- Big enough to get a good quality work, small enough to scan and still look good.

- A size comfortable to work on with out feeling like the art is being forced down in size

Here are some of my results (featuring the Masked Mariner)

The result: All of the sizes have their strengths and weeknesess. While working at the actual comic book size 6.50″ x 10.50″ is nice and you can really see the texture of the painting and brush work, the larger sizes are a bit easier to draw the detail that I would like to have. So many choices. It’s nice to know that as an artist we have so many options on how to do our art work. But if you think about it too much, it makes your head hurt.

Elvis is Dead at Zeitgeist

Zeitgeist Bar and Guest Haus is an astounding place to get some BBQ and drink some booze. The site sfstation.com describes it as:

Voted SF’s best Biker Bar, home of all things two-wheeled. Enjoy Zeitgeist’s 25 microbrews on tap, lush beer garden, and underground rock atmosphere. Hangovers installed and serviced.

By the way that is Biker=Bicycle Rider (messenger kind).

The special drink of the house is the “dead Elvis”, a mean version of a blue Hawaiian (I think). It was my friend Summerlea’s birthday celebration two Sundays ago and while at the bar I had to try this drink. And Trudy (who provided the below pictures) said she would treat me to one. It was tasty and potent, AND it also was the same shade of blue as the PortOPottys in the patio area. See:

can you find the drink?

Of course not everyone was as impressed as me, here is the birthday girl with the “dead Elvis”.

I can say that Zeitgeist, as Nathan put it, a true San Francisco experience.

‘Say 33′ for Asterix’s 45 Anniversary

It’s book number 33 for Asterix the gaulish hero of the international favorite graphic novel series…and just in time for his 45th Anniversary.

As I posted earlier, there is a new animated movie coming out Asterix and the Vikings, but a new original book is even more exciting for us fans.

The official website (click on CODE ‘say 33′) is giving clues to what the story might be about, hidden in the Virtual Village. But for those of us that don’t have the patience for trivia, asterix.co.nz/ has some clues HERE.

But to start with what does ‘Say 33′ mean: (from official text, by way of asterix.nz)

“the code name for the project: ‘Say 33!’ ” (Note: French Doctors used to ask their patients to say ‘trente-trois’ AKA 33 just like English doctors would ask you to “Say Ahhh”

A giant promotion in Brussels and all over europe is planned for the anniversary and the countdown to the book’s arrival in October. But with some knowledge that the artist/writer, Albert Uderzo, will be ending the series in the next few books, some big changes are expected. But what changes are in store for our gaulish heroes? Beating up Romans? Adventure? MARRIAGE? Read all the speculation HERE.

By Doubleclix, this new story is going to raise those thatched roofs, not to mention eyebrows! This album is going to break the mould
