On Thursday night the Cartoon Art Museum hosted the Creators Meeting that featured a panel on marketing comics. It even had Larry Young who wrote TRUE FACTS.
The theme this time around is Marketing, Self-Promotion and Distribution. Writing and drawing your own comic is only one small part in making a name for yourself in comics. How do you create a professional finished product? How can you make your work readily available to the public? How do you avoid going into debt doing all of this?
Our special guests for this panel discussion include some of the most knowledgeable comic folk in the Bay Area, as they discuss their careers in comics and provide practical advice for the beginning (and veteran) comic artist. Speakers include: Jesse Reklaw (http://www.hobocomics.com/), James Sime (owner and proprietor of the multiple award-winning Isotope; the Comics Lounge (http://www.isotopecomics.com/), Juliette Torrez: Gasp of San Francisco (http://www.lastgasp.com) and Larry Young, writer of the 2000 Year’s Best Fantasy and Horror graphic novel and 2002 American Library Association Best Paperback Astronauts in Trouble series, and publisher and head honcho of AiT/Planet Lar (http://www.ait-planetlar.com/)
I really had a good time. I was so energized that I could not sleep and outlined my big story on a wipe-off board.

Of course seeing this the next day was a bit frightening. That’s a lot of stuff. I tried to write each plot thread in different colors. But this is what happens when people connect on a live one or one way. And energy can flow, turn on or off, and recharge your “batterys”
I will try to post some of my notes as soon as I can, as well as my thoughts on a class I am taking with Keith Knight today.
