Have you thought of painting on toned paper? I could imagine that’d work really well with your coloring.

When you say toned, are you speaking of putting a wash down first of tone, or buying it that way?
I think either could give interesting result. I suppose when you put down a wash you’re more flexible with the color. But both work fine. I used to do a lot of sketching and calligraphy on brown wrapping paper (mostly because it was cheap, but I also liked the effect), and other colored paper of every shade.
I think I will give it a try. I am doing a pro-bono piece that will have gradual tone washes first and then the details on top.
