Video: Paper Monster Party 2 vs Superheroes – May 11, 2013 follow-up

NOTE: There are bits of sound here and there, but just in the middle. So be aware so it’s not too shocking!

Paper Monster Party 2 – May 11, 2013 from Brian Kolm on Vimeo.

Yesterday was the 2nd annual Paper Monster Party at the Cartoon Art Museum, a sequel to the event I helped to organize two years ago. The event allowed artists of all levels to customize paper toys into monsters or superheros. The superhero theme came from the opening today of the Superman 75th anniversary exhibit at the Museum. We had both artist who came just for the event as well as the general public who were visiting the museum cut, color and fold paper toys into their own characters.

The blank paper toy templates we used were:

- Fold n Fun by Brian Gubicza @ http://goobeetsa.com/freestuff.html
- P.D. Paper Dude @ http://www.custompapertoys.com
- Anywere DIY Toy by Morgan Gleave @ http://www.nicepapertoys.com/profiles/blog/list?user=00zvnchiqxozs
- and Paper Toy Template 001 by me, Brian Kolm – DOWNLOAD IT HERE

A big thanks to our artist/animators: Julie Davis, Rob P, Imogen, Andrew G, Renee French, Sameer Ajmani, Joss M, Alyla M, Mom M, and Rick Lucey.

The stop-motion video was something new from the previous event and was created with Boinx’s iStopmotion app on an iPad which worked mostly just like the desktop version, with the exception that the images are a bit blurry. I will have to figure out if there is a way to fix that.

Video: inkDrinkDraw Comic-Jam at the 3rd Thursday at the Cartoon Art Museum

This is the first ever video taken of a comic jam for inkDrinkDraw. George Webber took the time-lapse video and photos with his iPhone and I assembled them in Adobe After Effects. I am pretty pleased at how it came out.

What do you think, do you want to see more videos like this one?

2012-07-14 CAM Comic and Art Fest / BATMANIA at the Cartoon Art Museum SF

When I go to a convention, one of the things that I enjoy most is the energizing feeling that comes form being in a room filled with other creative folks. So imagine one of the largest conventions in the US, the San Diego Comic-Con with it’s 100′s of thousands of artists, writers, and performers and the energy that bounces around the room so much that sometimes you need to fight your way outside and take a break. Well, this year I am not going down to Comic-Con, but after talking to my artist friends we decided that we still wanted to get together with our peers and get that energizing feeling. So in collaboration with the Cartoon Art Museum Bookstore we quickly set-up the first ever CAM Comic and Art Fest (Sat July 14, 2012). The event is open to everyone who wants to participate: Artist, Fan and everyone else.

We (inkDrinkDraw, which I am a co-founder) have no idea if anyone will even show up, but we are setting up featured special guests, space to make and sell art and lots, lots more. So come on down and join us.

Mini-Comic Day 2012 follow-up

Mini-Comic issue 2012

Today I took part in the Mini-Comic Day challenge (http://www.minicomics.org/) that was held at the Cartoon Art Museum with the museum’s bookstore and inkDrinkDraw (both which I have relationships with). The goal was to write, draw and print a mini-comic by the end of the day.

Mini-Comics (and zines too) have been democratizing publishing since the 1970′s when copy machines were first introduced and all of a sudden we had new ways to cheaply produce a book of our own making. Even with the internet there is a power in a physical object that can be given, traded, and sold by anyone who want’s to make one. Anyone can make a comic and reproduce it for just a few cents to share it in a tangible way.

The challenge is you have all day to make a comic with the length, theme, media, etc up to the creators discretion.  We worked on our comics (including lunch breaks) from 11 am to around 5:30 pm with the standard length for all participants at 8 pages. My comic’s leed character is inspired by Bunraku puppets with their bulky bodies and tiny hands and feet. The title is translated by a web service and the characters loosely represent concepts like calm and relaxation.

Below is my final comic in convenient (flash based) format from issue.com. Notes on the challenge and creation follow below. Click the DIRECT LINK.

In the past week I have been thinking about what I wanted to draw for my comic and was inspired by Bunraku puppets with there bold proportions and personalities. I did some sketches ahead of time so when I did the challenge I could focus on telling a half-way decent tale. I also was inspired by a story I heard while at the Big Wow convention the previous weekend about an artist who did his rough layouts for his comic with a blue highlighter pen and then directly inked over them. I did some tests with the character I was thinking of using and the technique and found it intriguing so I decided to give it a try. About 2/3 of the comic was done this way.

testing drawing over blue highlighter pen

I got into the city and swung by Copy Central to copy some templates for the challenge today and then headed to the museum to set-up. By 11am artist were showing up and we started fairly right away with most artist using a template that was pre-printed. (note: we will have a PDF available on-line with the templates in the following weeks). Some artist worked with the smaller ‘pocket’ zine size while others did a quarter sized layout that broke a double sided 8.5″ x 11″ page, both ended up with 8 pages.

I knew that I was only going to get a fairly gag oriented story, so I started with a simple premise; the hero is trying to meditate and he gets attacked by the minions of an evil wizard. The layouts are drawn in either color-erase light blue or blue highlighter pen with most details being added with the pens I was using. The pages were drawn out of order for reading, but appropriate for when they would be cut and folded together.

Fun-fact: The design of the big-baddy creature at the end of the comic was inspired by a person dressed like a Carrot mascot outside while we were creating our comics.

That is all the info for now, but more will be on the way in the following weeks, so stay tuned for more.

making comic books since the 70?s or earlier… with the popularization of photocopiers, it became apparent that anyone with an inclination and some spare change could print a little comic book. Wildly varying in both form and content, mini-comics are a wonderful synthesis of cartooning and hand-made art objects.

Spectacular Super Sonic PAPER MONSTER PARTY X

Location: Cartoon Art Museum
655 Mission St. San Francisco, CA http://www.cartoonart.org
Date: Sunday September 11, 2011
Time: 11:30am to 5:00 pm
Being an artist can be a solitary job, so we want to find a way to meet more like minded artists who are interested in Comics, Animation, Illustration, Video Games and more! After all what’s better than to meet, talk and network with people who “get” what you do as a creative!

For our September InkDrinkDraw SF Meet we have teamed up with the Bookstore at the Cartoon Art Museum for another of their CAM-JAM events aimed at artists of all levels.
In the past we done everything from create animation to draw full mini-comics and even designed a tarot deck, but this session we will be having
a Spectacular Super Sonic PAPER MONSTER PARTY X.

In last few years some new type of art forms have appeared, making customized toys with artistic flair. For us we will be cutting, folding and customizing simple paper shapes into characters, embracing the limitations and letting our imaginations go wild.

Participating artist can sign in at the front desk and then you will be able to come in and have some fun with us. Planning on coming, why not RSVP to us or to the Museum’s Bookstore at bookstore@cartoonart.org.

Note:
We are asking for a $2 donation from participating artists to help pay for the
materials (as well as some treats and surprises) The museums full admission is required for anyone who is not participating.

“Paper Monster/character creation”
Come Cut, Fold and customize characters of paper and… maybe even with other materials. We will have plenty of blank, pre-printed shapes to use and will have some coloring tools too, but feel free to bring your own materials if you like and even your own customization projects.

“Share and Tell”
Bring your current projects, copies of your comics and art prints and share with us and even visiting guests to the museum.

“More monsters and open projects”
Come and just sit with us and draw and create all sorts of monsters and creatures or even just work on your own projects.

(While It’s not “required” to participate in any of these particular activities, we’ll have them on hand if you wish too.)

“Open Projects”
As always “Open Projects” is working on whatever project you brough with you, want to try or are currently working on.
Please feel free to discuss your projects with the group! We love hearing about what people are working on and will gladly give feedback!
