2012-7-09 Comic Book Creation – Cartoon Boot Camp – ages 10-14

I will be returning to the Cartoon Art Museum to teach another summer of Cartoon Boot Camp. Our third week is July 9th to 13th, 2012 – Comic Book Creation.

 July 9–13, 2012: Comic Book Creation Time: 11am – 1pm – Ages: Intermediate Artists ages 10-14 This boot camp features the process of making a short comic book story (2 pages) through the classic technique of page layouts, character design, penciling, and inking. Skills featured: Basic drawing techniques, storytelling

Time: All sessions run Monday through Friday from 11:00AM to 1:00 PM at the Cartoon Art Museum (For past students: please note the time of these classes is different.)

Number of students: The class size is limited to no more than 14 students. The class is filled on a first come, first served basis.

Cost*: $100 per week for CAM members, $135 non-members – per student for each session. Fees must be paid in full to secure a seat in the class.

Supplies: Basic Drawing Materials will be provided. Students are welcome to bring in their personal sketchbooks and materials.

2012-6-11 Introduction to Stop-Motion Animation – Cartoon Boot Camp – ages 10-14

 June 11-15, 2012 – Introduction to Stop-Motion Animation Time: 11am – 1pm – Ages: Intermediate Artists ages 10-14 Stop-motion Animation is the technique in which objects are brought to life by filming them in a different position for each frame of film or video as seen in films like ‘Wallace and Grommet’ and the ‘Nightmare Before Christmas’. This boot camp will explore different variations of the technique as teams: live action/time-lapse, cut-outs, puppets/objects as well as the basics of telling a simple story. Skills featured: Teamwork, Frame by Frame Animation, Digital Video Editing, Storytelling.

Includes: instruction on anatomy, action, costume, personality, back story, and rendering and finishing with a final illustration. Skills featured: character design, basic drawing techniques, storytelling.

2012-3-23 Kids Cartooning Classes at the Schulz Museum, Santa Rosa CA

I will be teaching two workshops on Friday March 23rd at the Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa CA.

Making Mini Comics
FRIDAY, MARCH 23 ? 9am–12:30pm
Join cartoonist Brian Kolm and learn to make your own comic book. From story creation, to developing characters, to adding action and adventure, explore the basics of creating a comic and make your own mini comic book in class.

Monsters and Mermaids
FRIDAY, MARCH 23 ? 1–4:30pm
Learn to draw fantastic and mysterious creatures from the black lagoon and beyond. Combine different creatures to make your own with cartoonist Brian Kolm.

2012-3-31 Free Cartooning Lessons at the Two Cat Comics Opening March 31, 2012

I will be helping kick off the grand opening of a new comic book store in San Francisco, Two Cat Comics. The event will be running all day of Saturday March 31st, 2012, but I will be teaching from 2:30pm to 4:30pm and then hanging out after for the party to follow. The Cartooning Lessons will be on-going and free to the public.

The NEW store is beautiful inside with bright lighting and hard wood floors. It’s easy to reach on public transportation by taking the K or M Muni lines from downtown.

2012-2-24 – 25 – 26 Image Expo at the Oakland Convention Center (AA 607)

I will be attending the Image Expo on February 24-25-26, 2012. I will be sharing a table with talented artist Rae Wood in Artist Alley. It’s a brand new convention, so it will be interesting to see the attendance. You can find me in Artist Alley AA 607.

IMAGE EXPO is a three-day celebration of creator-owned comics happening at the Oakland Convention Center. Image partners Robert Kirkman, Erik Larsen, Todd McFarlane, Marc Silvestri, and Jim Valentino, will be the guests of honor, appearing throughout the weekend for signings, panels, and special events. Other special guests include Image founders Rob Liefeld, and Whilce Portacio, plus the creators of today’s best creator-owned comics, including: Joe Casey, Jay Faerber, Jonathan Hickman, Ryan Ottley, Richard Starkings, Fiona Staples, and Brian K. Vaughan.

IMAGE EXPO is Northern California’s premiere comic con experience in 2012. The three-day event takes place at the Oakland Convention Center in the heart of the bustling nightlife and restaurant center of downtown Oakland, CA on February 24-25-26.

IMAGE EXPO isn’t just about Image Comics, it’s a celebration of independent creativity in comics. The exhibit floor is open to anyone who makes creator-owned comics. We’re also going to be hosting unique programming for fans, aspiring creators, and library professionals. 2011-12-03 Holiday CAM-Jam and Cartoonist Boutique at the Cartoon Art Museum – Dec 3rd

Hey all, here it is the last of the CAM-JAM 2011 events I am organizing with the Bookstore at the Cartoon Art Museum and inkDrinkDraw San Francisco. The events this year have really been quite fantastic with the final results being Animation and Paper Toy Monsters! But for this one we will be using the inspiration of the new Wizard of Oz Comic exhibit at the museum to draw our version of the iconic characters as well as having a Cartoonist Boutique! The Cartoonist Boutique will allow museum guests to buy work directly from the artists as well as get customized Holiday Cards and Mini-Buttons. (more info below the poster image)

On Saturday December 3rd, 2011 the Bookstore at the Cartoon Art Museum and InkDrinkDraw San Francisco will present the Holiday Cam-Jam and Cartoonist Art Boutique. The Cam-Jams are a series of artist collaborative events that happen a few times of year, but this December a new element is added…our Art Boutique.

Guests visiting the museum will have the chance to watch artist creating work inspired both by the winter holidays as well as the new Wizard of Oz comic exhibit. A selection of great holiday gifts will be for sale directly from their creators including:

- The premier of the first anthology from InkDrinkDraw SF
- One-of-a-kind Holiday Cards and buttons made while you wait
- Personalized comic books, prints, cards and more!

Another bonus is the artist-in-residence Kraig Rasmussen (www.monkeygong.com) will be located in the museum’s lobby signing his books and demonstrating how he creates his work from 1pm to 3pm.

So come on down between 12 noon and 5:00 pm and check out the current exhibits (Archie 70th and Wizard of Oz) while meeting some very talented artists and celebrate the season cartoon-style.
