I was virtually at Stumptown

Art by Mike Hales

This weekend was the comic book convention — Stumptown, in Portland Oregon. I was not there, but here in the Bay Area. But I was also at the convention…virtually.

First of all I did some graphic work for artist Alexis E. Fajardo for his Kid Beowulf Banner. Here is a photo of it.

I also was part of the White Rabbit anthology that my friends Mike, Kraig and Dan put together. There all linked in the side bar. The art and coloring is by Mike Hales. Check out his blog and website. My story is called Paradise Lost and I will post some pictures of the 3 page story in May.

My hope is that I can attend the actual convention next year, but I am not going to make any promises.

The ORPHAN WORKS BILL is alive! Yikes.

OK folks, this is scary. Comic Book artist Colline Doran has information on the Orphan Bill. The new bill would make all our creative work an ORPHAN and we would have to register with new private sector company and PAY for ever piece that we have created before the bill was available and everything after. All work we created would be free for anyone to use and would not be able to stop them. This is bad for us artist. We create work and need to be protected. The web is all ready full of people ‘borrowing’ work with no credit or agreement with artist.

Listen to the audio to understand more.

Read her thoughts and follow the links to hear a pod cast about. [link]

- Nothing we do would be protected unless registered with commercial registry. Registry do not exist yet. We would have to pay to have our work protected or everything is lost is how it would work. It would ORPHAN all the work we had done.

- Again. We would have to scan any older work and pay to have it registered. Any of old work would be ORPHANED.

- Even our work in our sketchbooks would be free game since they are not © when we create them with this bill.

WE CAN’T LET THIS HAPPEN.

Two Fisted Mystical Medicine Man

This is a watercolor painting I did at 111 Minna’s Sketch Tuesday this week. I started by painting in watercolor and then drew on top with ink. I also used the new feature in Photoshop CS3, PhotoMerge to combine the scans.

changes to Commenting at AtomicBearPress.com

I love to get comments from my family, friends and acquaintances, but I want to make it easier for you new folks to join into the conversation too. So I have made a few new changes.

- You can now subscribe to a specific posts’ comments so you can get e-mail notification to responses that other folks make. Just make sure the check box under the SEND MESSAGE button is checked.

- I edited the width of the comment text box so that it does not go under the sidebars. Now you can see your whole message that your typing.

- I put a message in the Leave a Reply area that mentions comments are moderated. I have a large range of ages that visit my site. After all my readers can range from 8 year olds to adults

- I reserve the right to not approve comments that are not appropriate.

So why not comment and let me know what you think. If you are on a multi post page, just click on the (NO) COMMENT text link below the post of choice.

As a reminder – SPAM is not tolerated. Commenting is a great way to connect and network, but there is a fine line between commenting on the post of choice and posting to just to make sales and/or drive traffic to your site or to make ad revenue. Posting on my site to only promote yourself with comments that have nothing to do with the post of choice is very un-cool.

Cyrano and Frank

Of late I have really enjoyed drawing with a brush and ink. It combines painting and drawing together in a wonderful way. I really like how these pieces came out. Some of them have had some color added digitally in photoshop. Click on a thumbnail below to see a bigger image.

When I drew this the other day I was watching the movie Cyrano de Bergerac on TV. Such a great story; romantic, touching, exciting, and sad.
