Classes at ZEUM and MSAT

This post is from earlier this month, I just forgot to publish it. My bad.

On Saturday (May 12, 2007) I taught a class at ZEUM in San Francisco CA. The theme was drawing your Wonder-Mom. I had some great kids come by that made the day really fun.

This is a drawing given to me by one of my students…

Isn’t it cool.

Here are the sample cards I created to show the kids. The drawing on the left reminds me of the work of Phil Folio.

Today (Monday May 14, 2007) I taught an after school class at MSAT, the Marin School of Arts and Technology. The all female high-school group were focused and fun and I felt good with the work they were doing.

Once student, Rachel Knodel created a fun character from a random name “Sweet Hate” who is a school girl who is secretly a super villain. I created the drawing below from her designs.

A big thanks to all my students, their teachers and parents.

Art: Rhino-dinosaur creature

One of the perks of taking public transportation is being able to sketch and draw a lot. I did this fellow while waiting for the bus yesterday. The pages are in order so you can see how one sketch progress to another.

826 Valencia Field Trip artwork

click for a larger image

OK, heres another story written by 2nd graders that I illustrated at 826 Valencia. The story concerns a giant caterpillar and her friends the wig wearing bald eagle and the toucan who loves to talk on her cel phone. They have there tickets to Texas Marine World Rodeo stolen by the cowboy-alien and enlist the help of a tough hyena to help get them back.

These were drawn in real-time as the kids came up with the story. Drawn first with a light blue Color-Erase pencil and then inked with a medium tip sharpie. The drawings are then reduced down on a xerox machine and pasted-up for the book which is combined with each students individual ending and bound into a book. Very cool.

The hyena at first looked more look a giant rat, and the kids told me so. So I quickly ripped off a piece of paper and drew a new head and taped it on.

Tin Tin and the Lake of Sharks

I just found this on YouTube. It’s a Tin-Tin animated feature from the 1970′s, the Lake of Sharks. I really like a lot of the animation and backgrounds, but I wish the voice where more like the series on HBO from the early 1990.

In ENGLISH
Tintin is sent to guard Professor Calculus, who has invented a machine that can duplicate anything, and is staying in a village near the border of Syldavia and Bodouria. Rastapopoulous, an infamous and ruthless international criminal, tries to lure Calculus and Tintin away by kidnapping two children, who live nearby, in order to get his clutches on the machine.

NEW KidBeowulf.com website! NEW Kid Beowulf publisher!

Alexis Fajardo has a new website for his Graphic Novel series, Kid Beowulf up today and it looks awesome. Besides a handsome, clean design it now sports a RSS feed so you can find out when it’s been updated from your favorite web news reader.

The new format also makes it easy to link too a certain post, like this one of an image I recently was commissioned to color. See the image HERE. (OK a bit of self promotion thrown in for good measure.

But the coolest part of all is that Mr. Fajardo has a brand new publisher as well, Bowler Hat Comics. You can read the full press release on the above link.

A big congratulations goes out for both the new site and new publisher. Why not check out his new site and comment on what you like.

The art of Yoshitaka Amano

Yoshitaka Amano is the character designer for classic anime series Battle of the Planets/G-Force, Vampire Hunter D, and many others. Most recently he works in NY and Japan and does paintings, many featuring the characters he created.

There is something very sensual and sexy about his work while being both classic and timeless as well as modern at the same time. It’s hard to sum Amano’s work into words.

Some art highlights to me are:

Vegetables that he made into characters. NY Salad art

The panthor headed Guin Saga.

Micael Moorcock Fantasies

Wagner Opera Illustrations

You can also check out the official Japanise website HERE.
