Another name for Fantasy

While listing to the podcast with Linda Medley (its linked in the post right below) it came up the need for a way to label comics that have something fantasy in them, but the label Fantasy does not fit. I think this is true for Beyond the Great Chimney. So what do you call it?

Fantasy-esc
Fairy-Tale-ish
Imaginary-Reality
Modern Fantasy
Fantastical Reality
Fantastic-tale
Mythitale
Fictionality
Magical-reality
Non-reality

any ideas?

Ink Stud has a pod-cast interview with Linda Medley, author of Castle Waiting. One of my favorite comics and a big inspiration for me. Listen and enjoy.

Ms. Medley talks about the history of her comic, the future, and the current releases from Fantagraphics.

Note: you need to scroll down to June 29th episode that says Linda Medley-Castle Waiting.

Kid Beowulf and the Song of Roland in progress

Alexis Fajardo at the Lexpress Production Log has posted some step-by-step pages from Kid Beowulf and the Song of Roland. It’s really cool to see how an artist works and this is no exception. Alexis’ work has come a long way since his first Kid Beowulf work in 2003 and he has developed his own distinctive style. I am looking froward to him posting more on his blog.

CARTOON ART CAMP: Making Mini-Comics – August 7th – 11th

I am happy to announce my second Cartoon Art Camp class at the Cartoon Art Museum is official – Making Mini Comics. The last one in June was really fun.

Thanks to modern reproduction techniques we can easily make our own books featuring our own art. These are great for gifts or to sell. Where some classes focus on drawing this one will be about taking ones are and making it into something else, a book. The class is small so there is lots of one-on-one custom help for the kids.

Below is the official press release:

CARTOON ART CAMP:
Making Mini-Comics
August 7th through 11th, 2006 from 12pm to 2pm
$100 for non-members ($80 for CAM members)

The Cartoon Art Museum is proud to announce its second class as part of the Cartoon Art Camp, a series of cartooning classes for intermediate level artists from 10 to 14 years old. The class will be taught by cartoonist Brian Kolm, creator of the comic book series Beyond the Great Chimney (www.atomicbearpress.com). Kolm has been teaching classes at the Cartoon Art Museum since 2002, and has also taught at the Charles M. Schulz Museum, and ZEUM.

The class will meet for five consecutive days, Monday through Friday, from 12pm to 2pm, for a intensive class on creating a mini comic book. The students will learn how to take their artistic skills and create a complete one-to-two page comic story that will then be compiled into a class-produced anthology. This class will cover storytelling, layout and rendering of the comic page(s) as well as formatting the work for print and creating a completed book using common desktop publishing tools. At the end of the session, each student will receive a copy of the completed class comic book.

The cost of the class is $100 for non-members, and $80 for members of The Cartoon Art Museum. [Please note that those with Individual CAM memberships may apply their own membership discount to students who wish to register in the class, one discounted fee per Individual membership.] All basic drawing materials for this class are covered by the registration fee. The class size is limited, and seats must be paid in advance to guarantee placement. Full refund for cancellations made prior to August 1st.

Patriotic Pirates Party

What could be more American then a merry band of pirate from centuries ago.

I was invited to a party hosted by a member of the Tales of the Seven Sea’s group for the forth of July. So yesterday I headed to Redwood city, first to see the cities parade and then to go the celebration.

Here is a window at a local costume shop trying to use the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie to make sales. The window is very well done with great lettering.

I first saw the group in the parade.

The lovely Tortuga Kate poses for a picture.

Their ship the Land Shark was on hand, with the mermaid Sushi on board.

You have to watch out for the likes of Lady Jaxx, Poisen Quill, and Pirate Mum as they sword fighting with each other (my camera missed the shot sadly)

…and of course the grog and rum was flowing freely.

They even had a cannon, so watch out.

After the parade I made my way to the party which was hosted by Richard Becker at his home. Now these sea dogs could relax and feast.

Here Richard (the Gentleman on the right) shows us some of his work.

If any TOTSS folks can help me caption the pirates names, please comment or email me at staff@atomicbearpress.com. My memory is bad when it comes to folks I just met.

4th of July parade 2006 – Redwood City CA

Yesterday I had the pleasure of being Redwood City, CA for their annual Forth of July Parade. Below are a handful of photos I took while there. Some might be out of order.

Before the parade started I checked out a car show with some beautiful machines.

Then I got to see the start of a run that was happening on the parade route.

This float from the artichoke growers featured a spinning heart made from the tasty vegi. The theme… the (artichoke) heart of America (get it?)

A cool retro police car…

Beautiful samba dancers…

Miss California and her court…

More lovely samba…

Ti-chi performers…

The wacky Standford U band…

and the slightly less wacky, but equally energetic Cal Berkeley band (go bears!!)…

The shrines had some scary mock cartoon characters….

and the Tales of the Seven Seas pirate group was on hand. I also got to meet this group more personally, to find out more about it…visit HERE (link coming later today)

…and we finish off the photo show with some Vikings.

Birthday heroes

One service I can offer is to provide some entertainment for birthday parties, like this one I did last sunday with a superhero theme. Here are the heroes the boys ( and one girl) created.

Here are the birthday kids and me with the birthday boy.

And here is the drawing I did for the birthday boy. I hope he liked it. I also printed some small prints so all the kids got one.

Sketch 6-29-06 Creature with Class

This was drawn after my class had let out and I was eating lunch. I used two piece of reference: a period costume and the creature from the black lagoon. I really like how it came out.
