10 cent comics: Adventurers

I have to say that I bought this comic for the art only. We are used to comics today that are shaded in color or shades of gray. Well, in the 1980′s, it was not common to have anything in indy titles but the usual flat areas of black and white.

I actually purchased a copy of this comic when it was new, but I also bought a few issues recently at Supercon 2006, in my task to rescue comics from the dime comic bin.

Here is a pin-up of one of the villians. Notice the use of grey, as well as black and white. (click HERE to get a larger version.)

The whole book looks like this. Beautifully painted renderings are throughout. I would love to see it printed with the higher quality that is available today.

Here is the nice painted cover:

BTGC graphic novel update 5-30-06

Well, it’s that time again to give a report. While my site was down for a more then two weeks (I could not upload files), I was able to re-work my graphic novel visual manuscript again. The old version of the script was heaping on way too much information that would just confuse the reader with facts that don’t even matter. Plus the story was so heavy on info it was getting to light on entertainment. So I set about to re-write the first two chapters in a different way. I don’t want to give too much info away, but the new version of the story is much, much better. I also have not tried to figure out the whole book100% like I did before, only working on the first 2.5 chapters. I know the story, but getting to tight with it has really set me behind my set goals. AND I really want to sit down and get drawing, but when the work is so personal at times, it makes it hard to do. Though I should be working on the final painted art when I am the Artist in Residence at the Schulz Museum on June 10, 2006, so come on by and watch me work.

SO I just sent a PDF off to a trusted reader to take a look and see if the story is working. Then (hopefully) I begin the art in a few days time. I know that I will make changes as I go along, so what I need now is just an idea that the direction is right.

Here is a rough page layout from chapter two where Victor hides from some distraught birds.

10cent comics #1: E-Man

I have a secret to tell, I’m…I’m a starving artist. That means that I have a hard time buying all the comic books I would like too. But that all changed when I was at Supercon 2006 in Oakland. You see I discovered something cheaper than 25 cent comics….comics for a dime.

You see, there are lots of comics that are prefectly good, but no one wants them or loves them, so they don’t even sell for a quarter. In fact they are marked down to the last coin that could matter…10 cents (a nickel would just be sad). What I love is that some of the comics in the cheap bin are good (of course some are not, but hey they only cost 10 cents, Right!). Right now you find a lot of comics from the 1980′s, a time when small publishers got in on the comic book action after the sucess of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Some just tried to make there own DC or Marvel ripoffs (can you say EX-mutants) while others got away from that Super direction and tapped into a funny book mentality.

So, the bottom line is that I am going to be sharing some of my finds her on the old production log. This is the first one.

One such book is the hero from the 1970′s, E-Man. He’s a super nice guy with the power to shape shift. He has a beautiful girl friend and a collection of quirky friends and foes. I had forgotten how much fun this comic could be. The art is clean and well drawn, the hand colored art has a nice fresh feeling. And it’s nice to find a comic that does not take itself too seriously.

I found the only E-Man fan sites on-line. The web master writes:

E-man and his trusty side-kick/love interest, Nova Kane, were two of the most original characters to come out of the decade many would like to forget.
Two energy beings with astounding powers, and a koala bear to boot. Browse this site and learn of the humor, novelty, and fun of E-man.

Interesting Factoid: The facial design of E-Man is based on James Bond actor Roger Moore.

artist Pierre Alary (Belladone)

I recently posted about Stuart Ng books and had an example from a French comic called Belladone. Well a friend found the blog of the creator, Pierre Alary. is a very very talented artist. Go check his stuff out. Plus he has links to other talented folks.

I am always attracted to a more animation style, which Mr. Alary has. Some smart publisher has to start bringing over some of the great French comics for the American market. The art is so fresh and dynamic.

Dial “B” for Blog

Dial ‘B’ for Blog is…well…a blog that is written by a fictional character. Robby Reed stared in the DC Comic’s book, Dial ‘H’ for Hero. He had a magic phone dial that would allow him to randomly be transformed into a superhero when he Dialed H-E-R-O. But it seems that if you dialed a different word the results would change.

My name is Robby Reed. After falling into a huge hole in the ground, I found a strange, glowing dial with alien letters inscribed on it. I am a young genius, and I spent hours decoding these letters. When I was done, I realized that some of the letters were B-L-O-G, which spells BLOG. Was it possible? I gave it a try. I dialed B for BLOG — and to my surprise, I was instantly transformed into this BLOG!
At first I was horrified, but now I am learning to use my blogging powers for the good of mankind. Each time I “Dial B for BLOG,” new, comic-related posts will appear here. Together, we explore the wonderful world of comic books! Wild! Wacky! Whozis! Wh atsis! Howzis! Sockamagee!

It is a great site to soak your feet in the comic book goodness. weird and Fun.

The Boxkutters first official single: Mistreated

From time to time I will post about the Riverside CA band the Boxkutters. You see, one of the members of the band is my brother-in-law and so I have a good idea of whats going on with the band. Well they have recorded their first single, Mistreated, and it’s avalible to listen to on their MySpace page.

Mistreated is a song about leaving a bad situation and moving on. In the song it refers to a guy leaving a girl, but it easily could be getting rid of the friend who you don’t like but your still hang out with or leaving a job where you are treated badly. Sometimes you have to move on, saying “I’m never looking back!.”

It’s a good song, give it a listen. And of course the guys like feedback, so don’t be shy and tell them what you think.

The great comic book artist and animation designer Alex Toth passed away yesterday. Alex Toth is one of the most influential artist from the comics/animation industry. I do not have to words to tell of his life, so I will let someone else do it.

Here is a little History at Book Steve’s Library blog.

And here is the official site which has been changed to bypassed the usual gallery’s and such and go directly to a forum post which includes words from Alex’s son Eric.

I wish to send the Toth family my condolences, Alex’s work will be Surely missed. He was one of the greats.

Absolute Write is GONE – help fight the villain!

In the past I have frequented the Absolute Write Water Cooler message board. While there is not much happening in the forum for Graphic Novels, the site is always abuzz for writers trying to be the best that they can be. It is inspiring and educational to say the least.

Well, it seems that a scammer agent, Barbara Bauer, has gotten the site shut down. This is a horrible thing. The best thing about AW is that it would allow writers to be aware of Scams and Issues that might effect them. Most of the scammers did not like this of course. In fact Ms. Bauer was on the 20 worst agents list that writers beware recently published. The Barbara Bauer Literary Agency is #4 on the list.

Below is a list of the 20 literary agencies about which Writer Beware has received the greatest number of advisories/complaints over the past several years.

None of these agencies has a significant track record of sales to commercial (advance-paying) publishers, and most have virtually no documented and verified sales at all (book placements claimed by some of these agencies turn out to be “sales” to vanity publishers). All charge clients before a sale is made–whether directly, by levying fees such as reading or administrative fees, or indirectly, for editing or other adjunct services.

Writer Beware recommends that writers avoid questionable literary agencies, and instead query agencies that have verifiable track records of sales to commercial publishing houses.

Note that while the 20 agencies listed here account for the bulk of the complaints we receive, they’re just the tip of the iceberg. Writer Beware has files on nearly 400 questionable agencies, and we learn about a new one every few weeks.

Here is the list of the 20 worst writers agents:
* The Abacus Group Literary Agency
* Allred and Allred Literary Agents (refers clients to “book doctor” Victor West of Pacific Literary Services)
* Capital Literary Agency (formerly American Literary Agents of Washington, Inc.)
* Barbara Bauer Literary Agency
* Benedict & Associates (also d/b/a B.A. Literary Agency)
* Sherwood Broome, Inc.
* Desert Rose Literary Agency
* Arthur Fleming Associates
* Finesse Literary Agency (Karen Carr)
* Brock Gannon Literary Agency
* Harris Literary Agency
* The Literary Agency Group, which includes the following:
Children’s Literary Agency
Christian Literary Agency
New York Literary Agency
Poets Literary Agency
The Screenplay Agency
Stylus Literary Agency (formerly ST Literary Agency)
Writers Literary & Publishing Services Company (the editing arm of the above-mentioned agencies)
* Martin-McLean Literary Associates
* Mocknick Productions Literary Agency, Inc.
* B.K. Nelson, Inc.
* The Robins Agency (Cris Robins)
* Michele Rooney Literary Agency (also d/b/a Creative Literary Agency and Simply Nonfiction)
* Southeast Literary Agency
* Mark Sullivan Associates
* West Coast Literary Associates (also d/b/a California Literary Services)

Remember my comic brothers and sisters, with Graphic Novels being the big buzz word now, these agents might begin to hurt our peers as well! VIGILANCE!

I used to love to read the post where someone would post an issue about a scam and then to watch as a ‘sock puppet’ appeared to defend the evil doers. Then the regulars on the board would jump in and pretty much prove how bad they were. On many of the offenders, if you google them, the bad stuff would come up first.

I also was able to find out more about how publishers and agents work, and how to avoid the bad ones. I am sure this will come into use in the future.

The bottom line is that AW is an important asset to anyone who writes. Even those of us who draw picture a lot more of the time.

The suggestion to blog about this is from Dawno’s site, she was a moderator at AW. The web is a powerfully tool and the more data we get out there the more we can make sure that these terrible scammers will be hurt by it. Visit Dawno’s blog here| LINK

This is a chance to really effect a real life villain. Someone who continues to hurt others. And she is only one; there are a lot more out there. Of course you need to stop by Writer Beware’s 20 worst agents to know who the villains are|LINK

Here someone has done a comic on their blog about the villain| LINK

And the great site, Making Light, posts about AW demises|LINK

The amazing Miss Snark,who works in publishing|LINK

I will hope that Absolute Write returns.
