Yesterday I spent the day at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. They have an amazing show that is ending on Sunday: Traditions Unbound: Groundbreaking Painters of 18th Century Kyoto. I can’t put into words at how beautiful the art was and how much it releated to cartooning. So beautiful.
The use of negative and postive space. Painterly lines. Story telling and humor. The use of color. I definitly got some new ideas for my comics and cartoons. This is a sketch I did of the Drunken Saki Rouge, a deamon who like to drink.

Here are a few more sketches I did. Oh, so much to draw.

This illustration started off to be a five headed power ranger. The idea is that they could only afford one actor who would play the whole team of 5 rangers. And since Disney has been showing the Power Rangers on their stations, the masks came to look like Mickey Mouse and his buddys Goofy and Donald Duck.
It’s a pen and ink illustration, scanned and colored in photoshop.

This sketch is base on a Japanese TV superhero from the 1950′s called….well I don’t know what he is called. I was inspired from a very different source, Evil Eye comics by Richard Sala. The book features the adventures of a sexy-gothish girl, Peculia. Peculia has a distant obscure boy friend, Obscuros, based on the same Japanese Superhero I had for reference. I then found a photo of the hero in a Japanese book on TV superheroes from the 1950′s to 1980′s. Such cool heros from Japans past.
Mr. Sala’s work is really beautiful to look at, with a dark-sense of humor, and beautiful women. How can you not go wrong with those elements. I originally saw his work he help create for the late great studio, Colossal Pictures, for MTV’s Liquid TV.Tag(s):Brian Kolm|Atomic Bear Press|AtomicBearPress|Sala|Richard Sala|Evil Eye|Peculia|Superhero|Japan|

Would you like to listen to distant memories, feel the wind of an enchanting world, visit breath-taking landscapes, and meet the people of your wildest dreams? Then come visit Mr Inoue’s enchanting world of Iblard!
Iblard is the magical world created by artist Mr. Inoue. He is an illustrator and fine artist who, amoung other things, help create the look of the Studio Ghibli film Wispers of the Heart. The work is mesmerizing and beautifull to look at. The site has gallerys of artwork with discriptions of what it is in relationship to the world of Iblard.
I could try to discribe the amazing work, but it would not do it justice. Just follow the link and check it out. I found this site vis Ghibli World, a site that you could explore for a long time as well.
I found this movie on the site, that uses CGI animation techniques to map a painting to a 3D model and then allow the camera to move through it. Very cool.

Well, my baby’s gone on a trip, so to speak.
I have given my graphic novel manuscript off to a trusted friend and colleague to read over.
I was thinking today that it’s a lot like a parent and child, and their relationship. Like a parent I care about my “child” my characters and story. But like a parent I can be a bit overprotective of them, too close. Some times being too close to the material won’t allow for the changes that are needed to happen.
Now, that is not to say that you should not be passionate about your work, or have a close connection to the characters that exist in your world you have created. The secret is a balance of love and logic I guess. If any one has words of wisdom, please comment.
In any case… I am really happy where the story is going. With the graphic novel format I have been able to add more detail to the story; new directions to go. It all feels right, and I hope you guys will check it out when it is finished. Stay tooned for more information.
