My Influences: Marc Davis-Animator and Imagineer

Marc Davis has been a big influence on me as an artist. It was Marc’s style of pen and ink with watercolor washes that influenced the look of a lot of my work, including my current style of comics starting in BTGC#2. Besides being a talented animator at the Disney Studios (Tinker Bell, Mallifciant,Cruella DeVille), he also helped create attractions for the Disney theme parks as a concept man. This is the work that I first saw, mostly in the postcards that could be purchased through a vending machine at Disneyland in the 1970′s. Here is a postcard image from Pirates of the Caribbean.

Mr. Davis helped create many of the most popular attractions at the Disney theme parks. Including the Haunted Mansion, the Enchanted Tiki Room, Jungle Cruse, It’s a Small World, and America Sings. Here’s his promotional image from the Bear Country Jamboree by Marc.

Marc Davis had a way of creating believable fantasy worlds that, still to this day, expresses a sense of magic and wonder.

Asterix and the Vikings poster

The Animation studio, A. Film, producing the animated film Asterix and the Vikings has an image of the official poster.

They have created the film with a talented english voice cast (Paul Giamatti (Sideways) as Asterix), even though IT WON’T BE RELEASED IN THE US. Let’s cross our fingers that that changes.

To find out more about the movie, visit HERE.

The Evil Overlord Devises a Plot

While doing some research on Google, I found this helpful page(s):from a lecture on Stupid Plotting Tricks By Teresa Nielsen Hayden.

While most story tellers strive to be unique and original, sometimes it’s best to stick with a time tested story element instead of reinventing the wheel. Ms. hayden’s workshop is part of the Viable Paradise: Fantasy and Sci-Fi writers workshop in Martha Vineyard. She writes:

- A plot doesn’t have to be new. It just has to be new to the reader.

- A plot device that’s been used a thousand times may be a cliché, but it’s also a trick that works. That’s why it keeps getting used.

- Steal from the best.

Here lists of information are really about what NOT to do. It is written for humor, including what villian is not to do.

If I Ever Become the Evil Overlord…

… My noble half-brother whose throne I usurped will be killed, not kept anonymously imprisoned in a forgotten cell of my dungeon.

You can also get some random plot elements, based on the site HERE.

BOOKSTEVE’S LIBRARY: Enchanted Voyage

Booksteve’s Library is a site about…well everything. As the author, Steven Thompson states in the heading:

A look at books, movies, comics, music, ads and collectibles from my vast and virtual pop culture library.

I was lead there from Cartoon Brew with pictures of Hanna-Barbera Land at Kings Island. I went there on a trip with my family when I was a tot. They had a boat ride called The Enchanted Voyage which featured all the stable of HB characters singing ala Small World. I was too scared to go on the ride and regret it still. So I am always looking for images of what it looked like. The author has some pictures of the ride which immediately excited me. Even better, his post today has images from Disney on Parade stage show.

I can’t wait to see what else Steve reveals to us. More More.

Want to see more Enchanged Voyage, visit America Loves Crap photo gallery.

Space Ghost comic by Alex Toth

From the semi-official Alex Toth website tothfans.com. They post scans of the Mr. Toths work every day on a regular basis. I went to the site today and found that the page of the day was the cover of Hanna-Barbera TV Stars comic with a Super Hero theme. The next page, tomorrows is the first page of a space ghost story.
