Goodbye 2005!

Happy New Years everyone! Goodbye 2005! Hello 2006!

2005 brought Issue #2 of Beyond the Great Chimney as well as many other freelance projects including: designing logos and graphics, coloring others illustrations, and helping create a promotional video with motion graphics and animation.

And 2006, well we got some big plans for 2006. But you will just have to wait a bit longer. I plan to have an announcement at Wondercon in Feburary 2006. I hope to see you there.

New Years serves as a chance for all of us to start anew, fresh, from scratch. And so Atomic Bear Press would like to wish you the best in this upcoming new year.

Gifts that keep on giving

I had a wonderful, simple Christmas this year. And the few gifts I was given where all ones that will help me stay inspired and enthused for some time. Here are the highlights:

- Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (DVD): this movie is the first original film by the great animation director, Hayao Miyazaki. This is actually his second directorial work, but his first film that is all his own work. One of the best features is a documentary about the history of Studio Ghibli that tells the studios history up too Spirited Away. They explained that no one was willing to financially back Nausicaä, since it was not based on a successful comic. So Miyazaki did a comic that became a big success, and followed it up with his movie.

The film itself is very good, and a joy to watch. The American dubbing is fine, as with most of the recent DVD releases.

It is movie that should be in every animation fan/artist library.

- the Iron Giant, Special Edition: An excellent movie that I did not have in my collection. The extras included the director, Brad Bird (The Incredibles), talking about purposed scenes that did not make the cut. A few are fully animated in Pencil Test form while others are skillfully animated storyboards with some motion added in Adobe After Effects (a program I am big fan/user of.) It’s interesting to note that the character designs are very similar to the style of Bird’s CGI movie The Incredibles. Such great 2D animation (and 3D, the Giant is A CGI work rendered to look 2D) Another movie that should be in every animation fan/artist library.

- iPod Shuffle: Oh, the little music player from Apple Computer that makes me happy. So what if I can’t select the exact song to hear. Spontinaity is always better for an artist. Life should have its moments where we are out of controlled. I like how small and portable it is. It will be perfect for snippets of audio to inspire and delight he who listens.

Been Busy

Oh boy! The holidays are upon us. So of course, productivity goes out the door. I have been busy doing some money work, and have not had as much time as I would like to work on BTGC.

But with the Christmas season marks the coming of the New Year, and new and exciting things will be happening sure. Like:

- I will be displaying/selling original paintings, drawings and comic books at Wondercon ’06, APE’06 , and Comic-Con ’06.

- The finalization of the first BTGC story arc will be complete.

- A reinvented website.

- I will be announcing some intriguing and exciting projects that I have collaborated with other artist on.

- I will be teaching cartooning classes for Adults and Kids.

And as they say, much much more.

Pez Museum and Podcast

Now, I have never been to the Pez Museum in Burlingame California, But I plan to in the new year. I have known about it for sometime, but ever since I listened to their Audio Tour Podcast I am raring to go.

Thanks to the availability of portable digital music players like the iPod, some small museums are able to offer an informative Audio Tour that the guest can download off the web.

First of all the museum in question has the PODTRIP Podcast to download or listen too on-line: http://www.podtrip.com/english.html

Then, if you can put it on your MP3 player and visit the museum. But for those of us who won’t be able to make it for a while, the official site has loads of images of the candy/toys: http://www.spectrumnet.com/pez/

I am very excited that the new technology will allow smaller non-profit museums to be able to offer an Audio Tour. I think we will be seeing some exciting enhancements in the near future.

Michael Sporn Animation

Animator Michael Sporn has a new website for his New York animation studio. Their best known work is for the Weston Wood’s animated adaptations of children’s books. The studio produces creative, artistic animation that, much of the time, emulates the look of different illustrators and artist.

Michael recently posted on his Splog (blog) about a feature they are working on about Edger Allan Poe. It seems to me that a whole lot of the New York animators are working towards the goal of longer format work. Nina Paley is doing Sita Sings the Blues, Pat Smith is working on something larger, then there is Bill Plimption who has done 3 features all ready. There is sure to be some very exciting material in the future.
