SDCC update sunday 7-17-05

Well, today is the last day of the con.

So far it has been a great time for learning and networking, but my busy schedual has kept me from selling comics. I am hoping for a surge of sales this afternoon, but we will see. I really want to come away from this con with another (small) step in the right direction.

I have made contact with lots of cool artist, and readers alike.

I have purchased the how to draw books by Ben (daredetectives.com) Caldwell. I will have a review in the near future. Ben worked such animated films as Hercules and Mulan. He is part of the new Generation of Animators who have used there talents for other things.

I help create a jam comic while the slow moments of the con happened. We will be posting it here at AtomicBearPress.com in the next few weeks.

My goals, to meet Tim Sale, Chales Vess, and to pass out some promotional copys of BTGC to some of my fellow Self-Puplishers. Any feed back is always appreciated.

I will give one last report tonight or tommorow.

Good morning.

SDCC post 3

Well it’s Saturday morning, and I am ready for the big day. I have on my Ambition Studios Anthology T-Shirt that I made and ready for the, hopefully, record numbers of folks who will come to the con.

The life of an exhibitor sometimes means not being able to actually go around too the booths, and the only chance is the hour of “set up time” that happens in the morning before the con happens. So that is where I am planning to be. The official time for the SDCC to open is 10 pm, but the exhibitors where told to be there at 8, and since we only get 1 hour of setup it means that they will, again, secretly let folks in at 9 am instead.

Yesterday morning I got to meet the amazing artist William Stout. His combination of inks and washes make some of the most beautifull and fresh fantasy art at the con. He showed me some concept art he did for Muppet Wizard of Oz. All of it was beautifull.

I also got to meet the two men responsible of creating all the special merchindise for Disneylands 50th aniversery. I mostly figured out who there where since one gentalman was wearing a replica shirt from the Tiki Room. I looked like the work of SHAG, but it was just cool 60′s retro stuff. I would love one. Thursday I had met Margert Kelly who was the live action reference for Tinkerbell in Disneys Perter Pan, she is also on the Board of ASIFA Hollywood. A very nice lady.

There where lots of fantastic costumes as well, from beautifull women to superheros and monsters. One was a robot in a cloak from Star Wars and it was done as puppet to create to spindly lmbs it had in the movie. A photo is forthcoming.

On the down side I only sold a few items at the Ambition Studios table P6. But then again I am not paying for the table. I have met lots of new artist, all with incredible talent. It will all serve me well when I teach my class at the end of this month.

Well, better go. Talk to you soon.

I promise that there will be photos in some form when I get back.

Feel free to post comments since I am having problems with my email.

SDCC update 2

It is the morning of Friday, July 15, 2005. I slept a lot better last night. They figured out that that the thumping music the night before was the cleaning staff in the resturant below.

The first full day of the con was crowded. I purchased the book “how the grinch stole disney” by floyd norman and it is extreamly funny.

Today will be even busyer. Natalie Portman, i.e. Princess Amadalla from Star Wars, will be at the con, and that means the Star Wars fans will lather at the mouth. I will stay at my booth and avoid all the hub-bub.

This morning I will be roaming the hall, trying to see what I have missed so far. I would like to meet Brian Froud today. He is an amazing watercolor painter, someone to strive to match in quality. I would also like to meet Charles Vess if he is at the con as well.

Well, my $1 is almost used up.

I will post again sometime tonight/tommorow.

Bye.

Preview Night was nice. I did not sell anything, it was mostly folks either A) running for something, proboly starwars related or B) just trying to see the layout of the ‘land’.

There are some amazing artist here. And I will most more later on as the adventure progresses.

I don’t know how I will spell check on this internet kiosk so, forgive any inperfections.

I am tried and cranky, but I will get something to help me sleep tonight and it will all be cool.

I am hoping to meet: Floyd Norman (animation industry cartoons), Tim Sales (‘a superman for all seasons’, ‘DareDevil: Yellow’) , and many many more.

Dreams … the Terry Gilliam Fanzine

I just stumbled upon a fanzine for fantasy film maker and former Monty Python alumni, when I was curious what the talented animator/director had been doing. Mr. Gilliam is responslible for many remarkable films including The Fisher King, Baron Munchauen, Time Bandits, and Brasil.

His lasted project is a movie about the Brothers Grimm (us release Aug 26 2005), and stares Matt Damon. The concept art is wonderfull. Check it out. The drawings of the tower(s) are amazing.

The site seems to have an IN to the lasted goings on, with detailed on-set reports and offical art.
