BTGC #3 update

I recently took a hiatus from Issue #3 of Beyond the Great Chimney for a while to do a few other things.

-Comic Con San Diego 2005 (working vacation)
-Teaching a class at the ZEUM (currently)
-Needing some income flow, working at Alcatraz

More info on these part of my life can be found on my News and Notes section

But sometimes not thinking about a project is as good as thinking about it for hours.

Last night I was ridding BART to visit a friend and drawing in my sketchbook. Now BART is great place to get ideas and work done. And a lot of time thinking about the opening of issue #3 all paid off, I found a new way to show it. I changed the POV.

Originally it was a flashback to the day when the family that had raised Ducelot officially adopted him into the family. And it was longer then I wanted and awkward, but I still felt there was something there. The whole scene was to show the villains Agacon’s (Ducelot’s biological brother) motivation and cause of the story itself. But it was not working.

So now the story is told from Agacon’s POV. A figure who has no connection to the family that raised him after his parents where taken from them at a young age. Here are the thumbnails for the page:

Alcatraz, goodbye!

As some of you might know, I worked for the last two months on Alcatraz Island National Park. Yesterday was my last day, so I thought it was time for me to share my thoughts and experiences.

I took the job to get out of the house and get some income coming in. And Alcatraz seemed to be an exciting challenge to get me of my butt. So I applied, and….did not get the job. But the person hired did not work out and I was given another chance. I worked with Summer and Patrick to do the GSR and SEAT Tram. Half of the day I would drive those who could not walk up to the cell-house for medical or health reasons. The other half I would be in charge of getting guests on and off the boat. Both of them offered a nice learning curve that gave me a chance to try things that usually make me a little nervous and require responsibility and a good backbone.

Here is the SEAT tram parked at the top of the hill by the cell-house:

Particularly driving up the hill with 19 people in a battery powered tracker was a bit harrowing at times. But like anything, the more you do it, the easier it is. I also got to be the guy who had to tell tourist that they missed a boat. Some people seem to forget all manners and responsibility when on vacation. At first I would feel really bad for the folks who would miss a meeting or plan, but then when it happened more then once every day, I did not feel so bad.

The rangers on the island are an inspiring and dedicated group. They are doing a service that all Americans can be proud of as they help us to enjoy our national parks. Here is Ranger Benny, probably explaining to the kids why throwing rocks and newly born sea gulls is wrong:

The island itself is a beautiful place, even with the fog, rain and wind that make up a summer in San Francisco. There is a feeling of mystery, history, and natural beauty. Unpredictable and exciting. Here is the dock area, right before I left for the last time at 6:30 pm.:

So it is with a heavy heart that I move on to my next adventure, and so I wish to say a fond word of thanks for the folks of Alcatraz Island. Here are a few more of the people I worked with. Thanks everybody!

SDCC follow-up Monday July 18, 2005

First of all a BIG welcome to all the nice folks that I met at the con. I hope you enjoyed your visit and enjoyed reading, Beyond the Great Chimney.

The below text has some spelling mistakes, I know. The siteKIOSK machine here at the hostel does not have a copy of word to drop the text into.

Well, the con is over and I thought that I would drop a few thoughts while I am still at the Hostel here in San Diego. The convention seemed croweded this year, but not the 100,000 that they predicted. I believe the convention will be changing a lot in the next few years. Our preocupation with Hollywood and Celebertys has changed the atmospher of the convention to one of star chasing and less about art. But change is inevible. I somehow imagine an all hollywood convention, or all video game convention in the future, leaving the comics and art as a a smaller, but more exciting venue.

There are a lot of great comics and storys out there, and I would love to see a time when some folks would be willing to give some new storys a chance and not just need to scream when a star walks by. Please read comics today.

So enough babbling from San Diego. See you all next year.

Comic-Con San Diego-sunday night

Well the convention is over, and boy am I tired.

The day was excellent. I decided to focus on promotion and marketing and to not worry about making money. Making money was hard anyways since I was not at the table very offten.

All in all the convention was excellent, and I felt a much needed lift of spirt and energy. I gave copys to many of the folks I respected most and hope that they will be able to give me some feedback to make my work better.

And besides, the Anthology that I am in sold well, and even thought I don’t get a cent for it, It introduces the world to my work. One person at a time.

So I will be posting some photos and links some time next week. Till then, keep reading comics.
